okay, but quickly, because i'm dead tired, and it's way past my bedtime.

basically the process goes like this (and i'm doing this from memory, so forgive me if i make a mistake. it's just to illustrate a general picture).

    • client sends a dhcp discover, looking for an ip address and a pxe server
    • dhcp server sends a dhcp offer, offering an ip address
    • ris server sends a dhcp offer, offering a pxe server
    • client sends a dhcp request to dhcp server, requesting the offered ip address
    • dhcp server sends a dhcp ack, supplying the offered ip address
    • client sends a dhcp discover, still looking for a pxe server
    • dhcp server sends a dhcp offer, offering same ip address
    • ris server sends a dhcp offer, offering a pxe server
    • client sends a dhcp request to ris server, requesting the offered pxe server (it doesn't need to send a dhcp request to the dhcp server, because it already has an ip address)
    • ris server sends a dhcp ack, supplying the offered pxe server (data is name of server, and name and location of boot file)

now, as you can see, a lot of dhcp traffic. but by default a dhcp discover (which is basically a broadcast) will not pass a router and will stay in the same subnet. so if there's any routing involved, it is best to let the dhcp server offer the ris data (server and boot file location) to the client instead.
