Sooooo its got to the time of life, where I am planning to start gearing down. I plan to quit work and move to a hotter country.

Anyone else have any retirement plans?

too far away to plan :( however I started putting aside some money towards retirement, hoping this will make it somewhat comfortable in 30 years. Can't rely on a pension, worked in different countries (hope to move to another one in few years) with no private plans etc.

What worries me more though is will I be employable in my fifties and later!

Whereabouts you'd like to retire dmarsh?

I love threads like this but sadly I've got about 20 years to go and that's if I'm lucky.... :emoji_crying_cat_face:

I don't know if it's still true but our money is supposed to go a long way in Thailand :emoji_bikini::emoji_dark_sunglasses:

Sounds lovely. What do you reckon you would do in your retirement mate? Anything lined up? There's no way your brain wouldn't get bored without something to focus on

I am a couple of years away from 50, at this time there is no plan to retire, basically because I can't afford to do so, I need a couple more years of decent bonuses etc before I can really think about anything like that.

What would be ideal, would be for my new place to hit astronomical heights, then be bought out by Google / MS or someone so the Share price skyrockets.

The only pension I have is the workplace one and that only has a few hundred pounds haha.

Does anyone have any tips for retirement? Sound I get a personal pension too?

My only tip for retirement really would be to either die before that time (with a large endowment policy / insurance policy from work), or earn enough now to be able to pay into a pension pot that will give you enough when you do retire.

Ditto to some others, no chance I can retire for a long while. I'm 39 in August :(

Property is without doubt the best investment anyone can make in my humble opinion. It's regular income while rented out and you've always got the property as an asset that you can sell. What's not to like (apart from broken boilers, nightmare tenants, increasing tax and headaches in general..... but apart from that!)

Property is a good investment, if it's being occupied but looking at the extra costs being thrown at people with second homes etc it may well be better off investing overseas now instead.

My long term goal is to get a mortgage and have my own place.

I'm currently single so my plan is to use AirBnB to rent out any spare rooms.

Things are certainly getting harder that's for sure. Sadly if you're big time, you won't notice much difference, but if you're up and coming like I'm "trying to be", the next three of four years are set to get tougher as they phase out mortgage interest relief out by 25% each year :( Mortgage free portfolio you're not impacted at all

We moved late last year, it's our 2nd place, we certainly aren't in a position to purchase a second place as an investment although I do have some money sitting in those premium bonds it's certainly not enough to put into a deposit for a rental property up north, never mind anything down south / east.

You've done great mate. TBH I've messed up a little in that I have a portfolio, but at the expense of moving up the ladder myself, so I'm not doing so good at the moment. Hoping I get a bonus of some description this year but I know next to nothing about it here, or when we get one if at all

Well we initially had a 5 year plan in the old place, that lasted 10 years, with this place it could well be the forever home (unless I make it big and manage to get a pile of land in the country with enough space for the pool house ;)) In other words chances are this place is it. :)

Oh don't, that's my dream. House with enough space in the back for a brick indoor pool with steam room etc. I'll be impressed if you can pull that off. I'll get there but I need to get a move on hence my recent job move. I'll have to give it 200% from now on
