I was wondering is it possible to do a remote install of XP from my main machine to a virtual system on the same pc?

Not sure what your asking, do you want to RDP to a remote pc, start virtual pc/vmware workstation and install a xp on a virtual machine?

What do you mean by remote install?

Do you mean deploy it over the network (as in WDS)? If so it is possible to deploy from physical to virtual machine on the same PC but you would need the physical machine to be a server OS.

Other than that I think you would need a Virtual PC running and then run the installation as normal.

Are you going to be deploying using PXE? or using a boot disk image that you mount to your vm? Keepn in mind you can install a VM of a windows 2008 server and then deploy the image using PXE to another hosted VM on your pc...It's just that it would probably be heavy on your system to do all that.

Hiya GBL. Build a 2k3 VM and make it a WDS server then create a blank client VM with PXE boot enabled on the same virtual network and you're rockin. Some help here. If you've got a copy of Vista too that can be fun but its resource hungry so watch out if you are using that 4GB machine listed in your sig. Good luck breaking things and once you get it how you want it, take a snapshot so you can revert to a pre-broken state
