I just gave it a closer look at: http://recaptcha.net/ and I have to say it's one of the coolest ideas I've seen lately.

    In brief:
    1. Documents, books and everything else from past and present is being scanned into digital format.
    2. This then is thrown at OCR software
    3. Everything that OCR software has trouble with is being put into reCAPTCHA pot
    4. This after slight pic modification is sent to reCAPTCHA modules on websites across the internet
    5. Human input is being compared for the same word between many user inputs.
    6. Correct words are chosen and replace missing bits after OCR scan.
    7. Rinse and repeat.

    How smart is that?

I mean don't get me wrong. I've been using it on websites for like nearly 2 years now, but never really thought how it works
