Anyone else up this early studying for exams?? I guess the fact that I have a cold helps with being up early since its uncomfortable to lay in bed with a stuffy nose and a cough! :x

LOL... I couldn't fall back asleep... the cold was bothering me too much... Now I am at the office configuring a switch for VTP for one of our customers... coincidence??

Heh if I did that after getting up at 4:30am I'd probably accidently delete all his vlans. In fact I'm not even sure that time exists... ;).

I am pretty alert, today is a half day for me anyway... gotta finish a POC then home to sleep.. I shouldn't of been in today anyway but I had to get the switches set-up.

Customer is looking to test something... don't ask me what they want to test... They don't give me that information... just wanted me to set it up.

I run VTP and why not?, unless you accidentally delete vlans it's fine :). That said if I get my network re-design proposal through I am going to drop it. No point in using it for small vlan numbers over small switch blocks. I do like it though.

I make it a point to steer as far away from VTP as possible, it's just a time bomb in a network. Still keeps network engineers in work fixing problems caused by VTP.

All you need are hubs and static routes :-)

Everything has its' place, even static routes and dare I say it... hubs as well (where you can't use port mirroring for wireshark goodness for example).

Don't you mean "where you don't need port mirroring for wireshark goodness for example"? :)

No i think he means what he said....if you can't use port-mirroring (i.e. if you just have a dumb switch) you could put in a hub which will allow you to monitor all the traffic.

VTP (or the more standards based GVRP/MVRP) is a must in large environments, I couldn't imagine life without it
most of my vSphere hosts alone have 6+ vlans trunked to them from different switches
