    LOL!

I got a word doc sent to me today in Office 97 format . It was a ‘wtf’ moment as Office 2007 thinks the file is insecure and requires a reg hack to open it.

Bet the user is running NT as well! :biggrin

Bet the setup is something like this....

ISA 2000 running on Windows 2000 - Firewall

    Novell Netware - Directory Services
    Novell Groupwise - Email Server

Windows NT with Netware client - client PC
Office 97 - client PC software

    For remote working:

Windows 98 SE with Office 97
External 56k modem to connect back to the office for access to Office 97 documents.

Am I close with this BM? :biggrin :biggrin

NT was fine, but I'm a gamer... I needs my XP. Or Vista, or 7 - doesn't matter. :)

I hear that sound everyday, we still have 2 Dot Matrix units in service!

They terrify me though because getting replacements or spares for the damn things would be an interesting excercise.....

No, a travel company. Charter airlines still insist on good old fashioned multi-part paper tickets from us, the negotiations to convince them otherwise are taking a while!

Interestingly though, I still managed to find drivers for them so they work with Vista.

This is exactly what happened. Vista certainly had it's share of problems, but not near enough to justify the metric ton of criticism that it received. Microsoft was really slow to react and understandably so because this was the first new OS since the blogosphere exploded and every tool with at least 1 hand and half a brain became a freelance journalist.

The internet is full of viral opinions and bandwagoning with re-tweeting and digging and blogging. That's the thing about the blogosphere, it's full of groupthink. If you want traffic to your blog, you need to blog about the stuff that people are searching for. At the time, everyone was searching for vista, so you need to blog about vista. But what if you don't have a copy of vista? You need to base your reviews on what other people are saying, and the early adopters say bad things so there you have it, 10 guys who tried vista early before the bugs got squashed out created 10 million lemmings to echo their frustrations.

Microsoft tried to react with that mojave experiment and subsequent ad campaign but it was too little, too late because people had already made up their minds. In the end, this is what marketing and PR are all about. How do we know that a technology is emerging? Because some PR guy at Cisco or MS or elsewhere did some research, formulated an opinion, and stated that opinion as fact, pushed out some press releases, etc. If you say something loud enough, and enough people read it, it becomes true.

Microsoft got it right this time, they listened to feedback, built a better OS, and more importantly they controlled the message surrounding 7. They made sure that the early adopters were well-credentialed journalists and that they had a flawless experience with the product. They spent and continue to spend a lot of money on PR and ad campaigns to control the message. That's what you have to do when you're as big as MS, use your resources to drown out those who disagree with you.
