(Someone tell me how to *delete* a posting please?)

    Thanks to Bluerinse for assistance.

This posting replaces one that got corrupted and duplicated somehow.

No - I am refering to a side effect of VFAT, which is a driver added in Win9x. (If I can remember this correctly after a bottle of wine!)

The sort of problems that can arise from this system are shown in
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195144

There are other nasty side-effects of a similar nature that can occur.

If it's one of your recent posts Harry, you can edit it and remove whatever you wish. It is etiquette to leave a comment like, I removed this post because it was incorrect information or something of that nature.

If you can't edit the post because there is a time limit I believe, then PM me with a link and I will do it for you as long as it is justified.

In fact I had already replaced the completely messed posting with the question! Somehow I managed to duplicate a reply, but one of the copies was a mess.

Thanks - I'll amend the posting.

I have been thinking further about this, and about my comments.

First - the Q talks about 'My documents' being in the root directory. This somewhat implies Win9x.

If this is Win9x then booting into 'DOS', either from a floppy or from the F8 menu, won't load VFAT.

And without VFAT then CD "My documents" won't work! You would have to use CD mydocu~1 and check that you were in the directory you hoped!

Yes Harry this was my point though I didn't make it very clear.
