I've been given the job of writing an instruction leaflet on how to connect to the schools wireless network. This mean that the kids have got to set their proxy setting on their laptops so that they can get internet access.

Now I'm sure there must be an easier way then lists of instructions, like a exe file or a script.

    Can anyone help??

    Thanks

    Hi AJ

One easier way is to set the settings you want on a PC then export the relevant registry key. All the kids would have to do was double click on the .reg file and it would configure their proxy settings. I've done this at work as a quick way of swapping proxies when I need to.

Yup automatic configuration files is the option here, you really dotn want to start trying to show users how to configure proxy settings :)
a reg file should suffice, but users may find they dont have permission to right registry changes depending on your security set up

and can someone move this to networking or connectivy and internet? (networking is likely more appropriate) :)

Thanks for that guys. It's for the kids laptops and whilst the machines are not members of our domain, they make it part of the workgroup and they can then access their home folders.

Proxy setting are normally done through GP's but as I said above, using their laptops they don't have the GP's coming into effect.

Now to find the Reg settings and make a setproxy file and remove proxy file and get some brownie points at work. :biggrin

Thanks for your help guys :thumbleft

    There is always a also!!!!!

how can I make sure by doing the proxy setting this way that they are getting their DHCP IP addy from the server automatically (although I know that it is normally set by default).

knowing the kids anything is possible and it's got to be right.
