Ok Raffaz...where have u been? I bought mine Sept 2006 off ebay for £136 (snippet at the time if u ask me hehe).

However they are virtually if not literally unavailable...

And yes just to clarify it is 1MB L2 cache (does anyone even read my sig these days? hehe...yes I know the cache is not listed but it does say the CPU)

Anyway Raff my old chum leave it with me and I will have a butchers for you...unless someone else finds it first...otherwise its over the lake to our friends in the US...or somewhere abroad hehe...

I have to ask, if you're on a tight budget why go for the expensive x2 4400+, why not go for the X2 4200+. It has the same speed (ok only half the L2 cache). I mean I went from a AMD 64 3500+ (939) to the AMD 64 x2 4200+ (ok it's the AM2 version) and noticed a big difference (and a big jump on the benchmark scores). IMO save up some money for the AM2 socket and the goodies that come with that :)

wagnerk has a point...altho I will say wagnerk...the 4400 is not that pricey anymore...as I said I bought mine for £136 from ebay Sept 2006...so the price will be lower now...

But Raffaz, I would say wait...save up then go for AM2...even yours truly is starting to think about going for AM2 soon...I have done a little price up and I can get a new ASUS mobo, with AM2 5000 X2, with 2GB DDR2 RAM (PC5300) and two new X1950 ATI PCI-E cards for under £500...nice hehe...

Altho I think I can see why Raffaz wants a 939 now...means he would have to buy a whole new set of mobo, RAM and graphics if he went down the AM2 route...kidna makes sense if u ask me...

Not by much though, because there seems to be a shortage of this chip around, prices aren't falling fast, currently one of the X2 4400+ on ebay currently stands at £116 (£100 + £6 p&p). A difference of £20 after 7 months isn't really much of a saving, but then again it is a good chip :)

have to agree...cos its so scarce now...it would be pricey here and there...but if u r lucky enough to find a bargain...go for it...I know I did...much better than paying £350 or so for it...

holy cow, I got the AMD Athlon 64x2 4600 dual core processor for 120, why is that one so much higher? Mine is a AM2 socket though. Maybe that is the diffferent in prices?

Supply and demand, supply and demand... :)

What's the best way of making people upgrade, push the price of the new tech lower than the old tech. However with that comes the extra hidden costs... like ram, graphic card, etc. When I upgraded from the 939 socket to the AM2 socket I had to spend an extra £80 on 2gb of DDR2 ram as I could use the old DDR ram with the MB. There are still a few people using AGP graphics cards, majority of AM2 socket boards only have PCI-e sockets, so another cost...

Anyway, if you look at any supplier the price of the AM2 chips are cheaper than the older 939 chips.

Sorry mate, I meant go for the X2 4200+ 939 socket chip. Ebuyer is selling the 939 version for £88.07, which is currently approx £30 cheaper than the X2 4400+ off ebay. Please don't think that I'm trying to tell you how to spend your money, I'm just offering alternatives.

Its ok mate, if i had the cash lying round i would probably get an E6600 or something, just skint at tho moment lol. Is there much of a difference between the 4200+ and 4400+ with the extra L2 cache?

To be honest for general PC work no, see here. You can select vaious CPU's (I choose the x2 4200+ with DDR vs the x2 4400+ with DDR) and on PCmark 05 results they were identical, however when it comes to gaming the X2 4400+ is better than the X2 4200+ (of course). Have a play around on the website and decide which chip is for you :)
