Doesn't look like it. Considering people are willing to fork out £300 for Vista, I think £90 for VMWare is worth it, personally.

Ah, Mr Ben - those were the days!

Its not microsoft mate, the only catch is that it runs in debugging mode for error reporting, it slows it down very slightly. Ive been running it for a while now and its fine.

You can always get the Beta version of VMware 6 for free.

Other alternatives include Virtual PC from MS, its free. Or Parallels, which I use on my Mac.

Neither of the two above a quite in the same league as VMware though, but for basic lab installations you won't really notice the difference.

The settings i gave UCM were the default - so 8GB is too much HDD space but i didnt want to confuse him with all the settings so he used all the default options.

Price wise i think its good considering i have used VMWare on my whole MCSA - so it has saved me having lots of boxes around and electrical bills! :biggrin

    Have you installed it yet?

Anway when I run VMWare it asks to be connected to the net??

When you create a VMware with say 8gb HD in the evironment does this parttition HD? Or is the space only within the virtual environment??

it allocates space from your physical hdd for your virtual hdd. it also depends on how you set your drive up in vm - im not100% sure about the terms used within vmware, but they should be pre-allocation and expansation or something along those lines. the first one takes 8gbs chunk from your physical machine hss space and is used for only vm and the second one (expansion) only uses what space is needed (1gb), even though it is shown within my computer in vmware OS as 8gb (drive space, and 1gb used). the 1 gb used on the physical machine gets filled up astime goes by and your store more data within the os of the vm. so it becomes on vmware (gb hdd space, 8gbs used)

    Hope this isn't confusing

What's this bit about VMW Tools?

This does not create an additional partition on your physical hdd. Remember, everything that is done within your vm does not affect your physical computer, except, RAM usuage, hdd space, and performance.

They will install automatically once you have your OS setup, just goto the menu and select the tools and then follow the instructions.
