If they're being lazy and doing a quick repair/reinstall job (as opposed to a full uninstall, reboot and then fresh install) it may not remove the registry entries which could be causing the problem.

I have to take their word for it - but they've always done it the proper way before now so I have no reason to disbelieve them :biggrin

    :hhhmmm

What about the value in this key:--

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2914519149-607054347-851236964-1113\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Options\Mail\UseWordMail:

If it's 1 then it will use word.

If you stop the winword.exe process manually does Outlook bomb out?

Also if you switch off the reading pane is winword.exe still running?

Finally do you get the same problem if you log on as another user?

Have you tried it without the SP3 for Office? It could be that something else installed on that laptop is interfering.

When the full reinstall was done, they tested it before reapplying the SP - so I assume this takes that factor out of the equation.

    It doesn't, frustratingly :)

Haven't tried this - will email the boys and get them to give it a bash (I'm on holiday now yeeeehaa!)

Yeah - it even happens as domain admin. Joy.

Will get them to try this one too.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far guys - it's been a great effort! I will let you know the resolve when we finally get it!

surely the saying is crack of sparrows fart, thats what I've always known it as (regional variations). Tis a very interesting thread though. Not looking forward to having to support outlook again if I move on, I've seen the light and its called groupwise!

Hokey, disappointing update for this one.

I (finally) checked the last reg key NB, and it's not even there...

... and I still get the duplicate process. Any ideas? :(

How about checking the homepage on the mailbox within Outlook? We have a problem at work when we upgraded to SP2 that some users would have the homepage set as a SharePoint page and would get password prompts for the sharepoint server - some oddity, but we've never authorised the use of this, so simply removing it resolved our problem.

Perhaps outlook itself is opening the exe or document?

Found this below, might be worth trying stopping other applications and trying to open outlook again, see if its some sort of conflict with other software

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810937

This issue may occur if you have ATI HydraVision versions 2.5 or earlier multi-monitor management software installed on your computer.

To verify that ATI HydraVision is causing this issue, stop Desk95.exe and Viewport.exe, and then start Outlook. If Outlook starts but Word does not start, ATI HydraVision is causing this issue. To stop Desk95.exe and Viewport.exe, follow these steps:

    1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
    2. In the Windows Security dialog box, click Task Manager.
    3. Click the Processes tab.
    4. In the Image Name list, click Desk95.exe, and then click End Process.
    5. In the Image Name list, click Viewport.exe, and then click End Process.

Note Desk95.exe and Viewport.exe were only included in ATI HydraVision versions 2.5 and earlier.

How about doing a system restore to the last time it worked - try it in safe mode.

It's never worked  from what I can gather - I certainly wouldn't be able to identify a time the duplicate processes *weren't* occurring (apart from prior to having office installed, which obviously defeats the point lol)

It has been reproduced on a fresh install of 2K3 with no service packs to 'affect' things. Further reproduced against SP1, SP2 and SP3.

Thanks for all your contributions so far (and nope, not fixed yet. But I WILL let you know when it is!!)
