    OK... question 2: software updates come in from the Internet, and set to automatic update? OK, that's question 3 as well... lol

    I'll take a punt on - VMTools not installed yet?

    That, or one of your device/speaker/mixer sound levels is set well down? (Or is that covered by you not being able to increase the volume?)

    What OS(es) are installed?

    Bingo! Your second guess is correct. The volume level of the host was set to about 20% and the VMWare takes this setting as its max.
