Sorry that was my fault I've been using Win 7 for a while now  that one might not be in vista but I suppose the best way to check is, go to printers and faxes, do you see a Microsoft XPS Document Writer?

Have you checked the spooler service after removing Fax and Scan?

Cool, as long as it is started thats the main thing.

How did you install the software when it worked previously?

Right well the printer software i installed it with the installation disc and i havnt had a problem with it, but the scanner i made the mistake of plugging it in without installing the software first which when this whole problem with the spooler came about.
But then i installed the software and the scanner was working fine even tho i had this error on the spooler, and the printer was working, but when i uninstalled both devices to try and solve the spooler error i couldnt install them again as i was getting the error saying the spooler had stopped.

Also when i go into services and right click the spooler and click properties it says the system cannot find the file specified.

Ok, is it possible to do the following.

    1) Format PC and start over
    2) Install printer\scanner software
    3) Plug in printer\scanner

    Should work after that mate.

Ok can you run regedit as admin and goto

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler

Right click ImagePath and select delete

Go to Edit -> New -> Enpandable String Value and name it ImagePath and press enter

Double click ImagePath and enter c:\windows\system32\spoolsv.exe in the value data

    Restart the spooler

I would undo that action then and change it back to

%SystemRoot%\System32\spoolsv.exe , restart then check it again :D

unless you intend to do as sparky suggested

Cool, just to confirm are you using a full version of Vista or a recovery disk that came with your PC?

Create a DBAN CD to wipe the disk, it will save you having to remove it.

Check if you have any files in:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS

Sometimes files stuck in there and you have to remove them.

After a PM lastnight, Problem is i believe that he is using a OEM CD or OEM rescue set for a laptop, with a home built desktop.

OEMs often alter inf files to install chipset drivers and the likes automatically, that's why slipstreamers sometimes have a hard time with oems

Thats why he cant even get SP2 to install, vista cant setup properly in the first place.

I told him yesterday he needs a true clean installation

Ok i am up and running and printer and scanner are working!!
I removed the drive, installed it in my old pc, formatted it, then put it back in the original pc.
Then i installed windows from my disc, checked the spooler and it was still the same so i thought what the hell i'll just plug my printer in and see what happens!
Well windows located, downloaded and installed the drivers for my printer, so i checked the spooler and it was still the same , so i inserted my installation disc for my scanner and it ran and installed!

    Happy days!!
So then i installed the rest of my drivers for mobo, gaphics card etc,
Then i downloaded and installed 57 windows updates then my pc rebooted and came back up with the normal configuring updates screen, but when it got to 100% it stuck for a few mins then rebooted again, and again, and again!!
I couldnt get out of this continual reboot loop so i had to reinstall windows again :x

But now im back up and running i have downloaded the windows updates but am not going to install them until i figure out which one caused this problem, i have googled it and a lot of people have had the same problem with windows updates!!

Thanks again to everyone who helped me out with this little problem :biggrin
