Sounds like a lovely Build you got yourself there, also thought, instead of creating a whole new thread on my upcoming build, I'd post it here!! Still Undecided on GFX and CPU though definatley want a GTX 280 (Not sure which brand as newer models are being released week by week!) and may swap out the CPU for a newer Yorkfield Core 2 Quad (Maybe even Extreme Edition, money permitting!)

The Extreme Edition chips have been without question an utter waste of money thus far. Yes they are the best you can get for a very narrow time frame, but they are hughely overpriced for what they are. Intel only made them to go hand in hand with the phrase ' A fool and his money are soon parted'. :)

    Yep, I totally agree.

There is no point in buying a £600 quad core cpu at 3GHz cpu when you can buy a 2.4Ghz quad core and overclock it easily to 3GHz or a core 2 Duo 3GHz cpu and overclock it to near enough 4GHz for £126 and £128 respectivley.

My 2.4GHz C2D runs a treat at 3.2GHz, that's faster than the C2D Extreme and half the price!

The only thing wrong with big drives is what do you use to back up all that data? another one!

especially as its a gaming ring do you really need that much space? have you looked at solid state or raptors/veloci-raptors ?

Good point! I mean coming to think about it, and extra £400 for a Slightly Better FSB speed?! What was i thinking!! I think it'll just have to be a Newer Yorkfield C2Q non EE. Glad i didn't buy it already or I'd Probably be regretting it right about the time I read this! LOL

You can easily get the quad 2.4 and overclock to quad 3.2ghz on stock cooling! That's what I'm doing with my new bulid once I get my mobo back..

Also, I'm going for a Geforce GTX 260. You don't need a 280; all the reviews say it's a waste of money and the GTX260 gives the best 'bang for the buck'. The BFG 260 OCX (overclocked extreme edition) can play crysis everything on high, and that's really the highest you'll get without spending thousands more. You can save yourself so much by going with the 260, trust me I've been looking at comparisons between the two almost every day since they came out. Even the 9800GX2 does bettr sometimes (but you don't want that card, driver support is going soon).

Solid State Drives are also very very expensive and aren't neccessary. You can be paying £200 for a 60GB version and for that you could get 2x1TB normal hard drives @ 7200rpm!

I would go for a better cooler than the standard one, quads can be a bit warm.

Got to agree with Jimboo. In games there is no need for RAID.

i think raid does offer better performance but then so does SLI but you gotta weigh up the slight improvement against the time and money of setting them up.

i read an article a while ago that said the best raid 0 is with 4 disks and the speeds start to degrade after that when adding more disks

I don't game much on my PC but I found normal read/write during daily use much faster on a RAID 0, even through the onboard RAID. After dropping back to a single disk I am looking to setup the RAID 0 again, just need another drive.

Well everything arrived from Ebuyer on Tuesday - excellent service as usual.

I built my pc last night - I have to admit it took me 5 hours :blink Still I booted it up and everything was ok. Loaded Vista without any problems - and got my drivers on. I'm pretty pleased with the result. There is one slight issue though...

The bios on my Maximus Formula MB doesnt fully recognise the CPU. Everytime I boot I get a message along the lines of 'Unknown CPU - Upgrade the bios to unleash its full power!' When i look at the CPU details in windows though it displays the correct info i.e. Intel Q9450 2.66ghz. I'm guessing i still need to flash the Bios? Is there a certain utility i should use for that? I tried to download one from the Asus website but i think it failed as I have a 64bit vista. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

    Many thanks in advance

    Rach
