I'm in the process of applying for a desktop position with the police, but have a question about the application form. They want to know any details for any convictions or formal cautions, and I'm not too sure if I have any.

About 10 years ago I was stopped by the police on 2 occasions and spent the night in the cells. One was for trying to do a runner from a taxi, and the other was for being drunk, getting into a fight and having some weed found on me (only a little though).

Do I need to declare these? Or how can I find out if these are still on my record. I don't want to lose out on a very good position for some stupid behaviour when I was younger.

I think convictions like yours are spent after 10 years?
It may be worth ringing the HR Department to ask.

You could goto your local cop shop, fill out a form, pay something and then they will give you a report on yourself

Different forces have different rules, for different positions. The application form and guidance should tell you whether you have to put the cautions - or whether they are expunged from your record after a certain period of time. If in doubt do NOT just ignore it and chance it - this happened to someone at the force I used to work for - he was dimissed with no notice and no reference when it came to light 18 months after he started.

    I'm with Zeb here...
If it's on your record, then they'll obviously know about it, it's down to you to be truthful and honest, and it wont look too good if you miss it out.
...and if it's been removed off your record, then who cares, you were honest in telling them, and that's what they want.
