Yes he uses it to make a point and that is fine. However constant use of elite speak is discouraged here as we are trying to encourage people to communicate in a professional manner - for the good of the forum and for the benefit of people trying to get into this profession.

Communication skills are extremely important if you wish to progress in IT. It's horses for courses, l33t speak is fine when you are chatting to mates on MSN, but you should use proper English when you are communicating with a plethora of IT Pros on an Internet forum :biggrin

Having said that, it is not a requirement, people can post using Morse code if they like but they might find the responses are less forthcoming.

True Pete, but what is proper english, infact I did not know there was internet slang until I came here:blink

IMHO there should be a guide on this forum on how to use these terms.

    What do you think?

Well, IMHO proper English is using grammar and words containing letters only, not numbers e.g. l33t - like your poor old English teacher tried to teach you but clearly failed dismally :p

I have no issue with Americans using their version of English, that is fine by me.

As for a guide, hell no, there are other forums and sites I am sure that cater for that.

:blink What the different between the English version and American. We did learn our language from you guys. I know I slaughter the written words to pieces, but that not Americas faults. It was my teachers! :biggrin

:ohmy Or could it be that I've been spelling them right all these years, and THEY have been spelling it wrong???? Ohhhh, just wouldn't that be a fit justice. :dry

    Hi all,

I guess I would consider myself a lurker on these forums as I'm new to the courses; yet not new to forums or IT :)

I think it's more to do with a few things, 1. time; the amount of time it takes to read and process stuff from the net seems to take up a lot of my time 2. desire to post; I guess if you have a question on the spur of the moment, you'll want to ask someone, but can just as easily google it unless you're totally unsure about who will reply to you on the forums, as was mentioned earlier about silly replies. or 3. just a natural urge to remain anonymous in a virtual environment; people here still want to keep themselves private, especially if they are lurkers!, even though they don't have to reveal every nook and cranny of their lives ;) but I guess it just takes a little coaxing to make people want to communicate with each other in an internet forum.

Of course I could just be talking out of my posterior :)

Lurking off (for a bit, 3000ms...)

Maybe you should take a look at this Cheek:-

    IMHO LOL

Many are shorthand for often-used phrases or idioms, or for emotional states or levels of certainty. Most of these are not really acronyms as we can not say them in the way they are written. But some people still call them acronyms. people created some of them because they are shorter to type. With the steady increase in laziness in the post Gen-X generations, taking the extra six seconds to type in proper English is considered "uncool" by the crowd that excessively uses these slang terms or other "elite speak" concepts. OR the real reason, is that many of these came about during online gaming, or large chat rooms, where brevity meant the difference between being an effective communicator.

Internet slang is both slang words from earlier uses, and some new slang words, mostly about things that didn't exist until the Internet. Some words are new, for example blog and wiki.

    It is not english!

IMHO is not in the oxford English Dictionary!:dry
It lazy english, just like Mobile text messages.

Now how do I have time for Warhammer when I'm on WoW?? :P Didn't get into it as much when I was a kid, but looked at the stuff in GW when I was there, now I've transferred my geekiness to the internet. Easier to lurk here than in GW lol.

    Woah!
Way off topic now - and this thread is getting a bit of a sparring session.

I lurk sometimes. Work is really hectic sometimes and I don't have time to chat, but I do like to keep up with whatever is going on. I'll only respond to things that tickle my interest.

Lets face it, most lurkers are Scheidegger salesmen trying to keep up with popular opinion.

Mind you, looks like at least one person has come out - but as Baba says, it's a bit of a paradox. If you respond to a thread about lurkers, you are no longer a lurker...

Not much Mitzs a few spelling differences eg American's spell colour > color throw a few Z's in words instead of S's as in Customize (US) Customise (UK). Some words have completely different meanings, like fag = cigarette (UK) but there are just as many differences here in Oz.

I can cheer you all up by telling you that in addition to the red sqiggly line (bad spelling) and the green squiggly line (bad grammar), Office 2007 now has a blue squiggly line (what you talkin' about Willis?)

Check it out if you don't believe me, or are too young to get the reference...
