Let's try and bring this back to topic after that wretched UCM with all his thread-hijacking skullduggery came posting a load off-topic nonense.:D

    Thanks mufftak,

I wouldn't say you are a true lurker in that you have the will to post but not the time. I would say a true lurker is someone who conciously chooses not to post.

I can half understand why people don't post, particularly if they are new. I've only joined few months ago and at first was a bit hesitant to post as

    a) There was nothing I knew that you lot didn't (regarding IT, that is) so therefore thought I couldn't make a valid contribution
    b) I was a bit wary of posting a question which to me was baffling yet to some people it would be like asking what the main ingredient of toast is, so thus did not want to appear like a wally.

However, after taking the time to lurk - particularly in the Lounge forum - you quickly find out that everyone here is indeed human (with a few exceptions, no names mentioned) :D and likes a laugh as much as the next person.

Ps I still don't know a lot, hence why I waffle on and still ask stupid questions, but Rikki Lake would be proud of me for overcoming my demons :)

You'd actually be surprised about 'stupid' questions -- not only are they *not* stupid, but more than a few of us probably have (or have had) that same question before. Sometimes, I forget a stupid question I was thinking of, and then someone tells me the answer much later, and I'm blindsided by revelation.

Steering back on track, I think it's definitely a societal study why people lurk -- and it's not just one reason. For me, I've lurked at numerous forums because I'm not confident in tossing out little-researched answers. If my knowledge level is subpar, then I hang back indefintely, where most people would just toss out what they know (or think they know). Some people respond with an answer that was already posted, which is a gigantic waste of space, particularly in the sense that they have no earthly clue (or care) about the thread's point -- almost as if they've only read the previous post. :dry

Actually, with Sparky's DNS issue, I held back, if only because I didn't want to throw the thread off track. I know DNS very well, but outside of a home lab, my limited professional admin experience is not AD, much less M$ (I'm a bonafide paper-MCSE w00t!). I'd let other more experienced people chime in, and just watch the thread -- most times, when I lurk, I learn something new. It's one of the few times the Observer Effect *doesn't* seem to apply. As such, most times I'm better for just lurking, until I've got something *real* to contribute, or I'm extremely confident on the subject, or I'm just congratulatory. Otherwise, lurk mode *on*.

But what if your the one that holds the anwser to the question. Why make someone wait till a more exp person comes along to say it? Is it a pride thing? Afraid of posting the wrong thing? I can't see that either? Just curious.:)

As for lurkers, putting them on the spot is not going to bring them out into the light but push them deeper into the shawdows. Specially if they are shy, or feeling funny talking to people that they have never met in real life. These kinds of sites are to help anyone that needs it. Just because someone doesn't say thank you doesn't mean they don't appreciate it. Nor is it a requirment for a member of the site. That they vote in polls and never post shows their appreciation. I myself could never be a lurker, my personality would never allow me to be that quiet for that long.:biggrin As for the lurkers, I say leave them be. Don't make them feel unwanted because they are not actives on the board.
Either way they are being helped and in the long run that is all that matters and what this site is here for. (winks, sighs, and runs for cover before shite hits the fan)

ahhhh, my little banana addict, baba does have a valid question that we would all like to know the anwser to. However, your never going to get an anwser from a true luker and I see no reason in making people uncomfortable is all.

Just to let you know Mitzs there's some post for you over at TU:biggrin

I can see Baba's point of view, but he has to learn not everyone except this view.

I feel uncomfortable interacting here and yet I am not a true lurker, but like CSX I feel unsure about posting my questions here.

Search the forums then, little Monkey! That's what the search function is for, and the reason some feel hesitant to ask questions because they get jumped on for *not* searching. I use it all the time, particularly if I remember someone posting about the topic a while back. However, all things told, let the grumpy peeps complain -- most times they don't help anyways, and just grumble about everyone else. Ask away, I say!

mitzs, I brought up the DNS issue as a point -- the answers were along the same line of thought I had, so I let the other fellas chime in. If I thought there was something missing, I'd have stepped in -- particularly when there is little-to-no answer already. However, you have scratched an itch I have -- if I'm not confident 110%, I might refrain. I think perhaps most answers in life aren't very simple, and take thought and research to come to a conclusion. Besides, I'm not the coldest beer in the fridge as it is...:biggrin

Fortch right Monkey, use the search, and if you can't find your anwser or don't like those that you find, ask you question. Never be afraid to ask one. So what if it is a repeat? On a site that been around awhile and has a large number of users, there will be alot of repeat question as time goes on. Don't belive me? Hit the A+ N+ forums. Which book is best ring any bells? :biggrin

Don't worry about the ones that don't want to be helpfull, because there are to many here that are.

As for you Fortch, go on with yourself. Your one of the smartest people I know. Your just being shy and humble.:)

Thankyou! fortch, CF has grown so big now, it's all to easy to get lost around here:biggrin

I do use the search function, but there are limitations to this as there are when you use Google. It's knowing the correct keyword to use.

Recently I was searching for a thread by TCM called Studying A+, even under the search function I couldn't see the thread. The search just bombarded me with various A+ Posts:blink

The only way around it is to search through TCM Thread list, under his profile.

There are alot of people who do grumble round here, maybe they are fed up with being asked the same question or because they are a Victor Meldrew?

I am not concerned about the ones that don't post a reply! Some prefer like deathstar and techmaster (from other forums) to use CF as a research tool. Which is fair enough, I do that as well!

it's the one's who do reply with stupid unhelpful remarks, anyway I am not here to point fingers or name names. But you know who you are!!

That statement refers to technical questions about IT.

BABA if you look at my posts they are general advice on training providers, life or just saying hello to someone new to the forum.

I can't post reply to most of the questions asked here, because I am still a newbie in IT!

However, I have experienced Bootcamps, CT and other training providers and therefore can give a little advice back!

Unlike some people here, it's all too easy to forget what's it's like to be new to Forums:(

Trying to work out how the place works, what the tools do, how do the smiley's work and what's all the kudos about?

There's even members here who Ostracise newbie's for using the incorrect internet slang ie. m8:rolleyes:

I was gob smacked to read the response from my thread about GOODBYE TO CF I honestly thought some people round here would be glad to see me gone.:blink

Even more shocked :ohmy and horrified:confused3 when couple of months ago I was accused of not supporting CF :blink
    WTF :cussing I thought?
I'd rather hang around a forum were I can do more good than damage.:dry Yet I have been asked the question on email why no CF????

So clearly I do make a difference

    Perhaps we all were really!

I never noticed that thread, but it's ridiculous. No one has an obligation to this or any other forum. The way I see it, you can't not support the forum because every time you visit the site you generate advertising revenue to pay for SimonV's mortgage.

Not ostracise, but advise. No one has ever said "you use l33t so I'm not going to talk to you". People have said (me included) "don't use l33t it's a pain in the arse and makes your posts illegible". There's a difference.

What is l33t? :blink I'm afraid I agree with this. Your not in a chat room nor are you just a user who thinks it cute to write like an idiot. Your an IT professional now. And I thought I slaughter the English language.:blink
