    Ideal would be a polo, since I learned in one.

    Preferably looking for a 1.2-1.6, with PAS and ABS, for around 2-2.5k (i dont really want to spend more than about 2k on the car to be honest, so the limit on asking price is about 2500).

    I would say it's worth travelling if it the car looks good. You should be able to get a reasonable deal from a main dealer atm also. Have a look also on VWs website. They have a dealer locator and most of the have an approved used car list.
