Brussels isn't the best to be honest mate, nightlife is crap, weather is crap and the women are especially crap. The work is good though and it's close to France, Germany, Holland etc so you can do something different every weekend.
As for staying, for the moment yes but not long term, the mrs lives in Romania so might give that a whirl next year, haven't properly decided yet!
How's Liverpool? Was there last year for my birthday, fantastic night out!

Yeah great night out in Liverpool if I say so myself. Things are good mate but I'd love to do some traveling for work like your good self.

Security Architect isn't it you do? I'd like to get into that line of work, that or pen testing.

I'm currently a PM, many of the projects i've managed are security related such as disaster recovery projects, business continuity, carveouts (when the company I work for sells a division all infrastructure and apps have to be separated) NetIQ implementations, WSUS, McAfee ePO stuff, security awareness programs etc. Most of them were on an European level and involved travelling to the company sites in Ireland, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, it's been good fun and i've had an interesting few years.

What is it you do mate?

I work as a Team Leader of a team of "Jack of all trade" types who support contracts across the north west. Its really varied and we cover everything from installing switches, network issues, security fixes, all kinds really. Its alright but very busy at times and I'm a not a master of anything IMO, so I want to get into Networking and Security soley. Had an internal interview last week so waiting to hear back.

I've got a little boy now so I want to step my career up a notch and earn all I can. I get great training and support but right now I'm stuck around 42k and can't seem to break that barrier

Your job sounds really interesting mate, I'd love to do some work outside of the UK. I'll keep working hard, fingers crossed

42Gs is excellent for a permie position in that area isn't it mate? One of the reasons I left Blackpool was there didn't seem to be many well paid jobs locally, unless you count Manchester of course then it would have been painful getting there every morning.
Working outside the UK has its pros and cons, but suppose if you have a family it would be much more difficult.

Yeah I am thankful but still want to push myself. I suppose it is decent for up north yeah. I've seen a few jobs come up in EDS, its a HP company isn't it. Was it any good in there mate?

My girl and baby would come with me if I worked abroad. I'm maybe thinking about emigrating to Oz one day too. There are a few good jobs in Syndey. I'd just rent my house out.

Do you like the project work mate? I don't think I enjoy it as much as getting my hands dirty

EDS was a shambles, few people knew what they were doing but the majority were clowns. Still speak to a a couple of pals there and it doesn't sound like anything has changed.
The wages seem to be good in Oz and the cost of living is much lower. Long way though!
As for project work I still get my hands dirty a bit but nowhere near as much as in the past. I work with some really talented people though so still learning new stuff. Downside is you have all the responsibility if it goes wrong, can be rewarding though when you complete a high profile project on time and under budget then the CIO gives you a pat on the back.

Will do mate, its really interesting if nothing else. I'm thinking of booking my exam because its basically like Security+ on steriods but not that tough once you've done a bit, you'd find it easy I think.

    Hi Bri1981

What part of EDS did you work for? I'm suprised they were a shambles as we've done business with them for a couple of years now and I've found the consultants and support people pretty smart. Big organisation now, so I suppose it could have been a different area. The reason I ask it that it's the type of company that I've got my eye on for a move to.

Hiya mate, I worked for the SDC team (think this stood for software development and configuration) The project was for the rollout of all the Department of work and pensions offices plus job centres in the country for. Biggest rollout in the UK at the time (before NHS), there were about 200000 users, 2000 or so servers, was massive. This team was broke into many smaller teams such as desktop support, server, messaging, radia (software deployment) and a few others.
Wasn't the best experience I had, the people were generally incompetent and the management were muppets. Don't get me wrong there were some guys who knew loads but they were few and far between. Not much room for progression, no training, nothing.
When you say big organisation now how do you mean? They no longer exist due to being taken over my HP.
Still have a few mates there, they are all after taking voluntary redundancy to escape elsewhere.
