Looks like I'll need to get this cert out of the way first... My boss wants me to get this done and I'll be doing a lot of active directory work shortly... we're migrating from 2003 to 2008 in a few months. So far I am on chapter 4 of the 293 book and I've got to admit I've done quite a bit myself when it comes to experience so that's good... I realized I've done more than what I thought I did which is good... The only thing I'll probably be learning a lot about is the 294 exam because it's all about AD. So the 293 exam is scheduled for Nov 29... gives me a little under 2 months to prepare which I'll probably reschedule to a sooner date as this is going a lot faster than I originally thought..

    Good stuff mate.

I was the same, I didnt find much of a jump from the 70-291 to the 70-293 so took it much sooner than I expected.

Thanks guys! Putting in the studies at work during lunch and breaks. I got the momentum going and until I get the MCSE I won't stop... if I stop in between it will be harder for me to get into it after.

So you're going for the MCSE but you're upgrading to 2008? As such, not a bad idea as the MCSE sounds good and will help you understand AD concepts (which are very similar in 2008 vs 2003) and will help you migrate anyway. But do you also have plans to upgrade your certification to MCTS/MCITP in 2008? Might be a good idea a year from now (knowing how an MCSE takes time to achieve due to the number of courses and exams that one needs to go through). Getting a 2008 upgrade exam after that should be childs play ;)

    Good luck!

Exactly what you said, I agree! :biggrin

Here's the scoop. I find MCSE a very valuable certification still today, many companies use Windows Server 2003 and are requiring admins to manage them, plus I have the experience so it's all good. I feel comfortable managing big environments because I work for a 400 user company with many servers. The reason I am waiting for MCITP is because I've never had as much exposure as I do on windows server 2003 and I am not as comfortable in 2008 as I am in 2003... I will probably wait a year after our migration to 2008 so that I can meet the requirements and not just be a paper MCITP but actually know my stuff...

When I put my MCSA or MCSE (when I get it) on my CV, I am pretty darn comfortable when it comes to that technology.

Yes, an MCSE definitely looks good on the CV. So I have no qualms with someone going for an MCSE certification, even if they manage a 2008/R2 environment.

All the best of luck for the studies. It'll be a fun year ahead of you :) May you learn a lot and become a succesful sysadmin!

    Get involved mate!

I have one more exam for the MCITP: EA, just not had time to read the material on it, due to the new job, and moving house.

I might just sit the exam without studying and see what happens :biggrin

Use the second shot! I could probably sit the 293 as well without studying... but I'd like to learn a little about clustering, although I've been using it for a while with our Exchange Active/Passive cluster and SQL Cluster.
