For those of you that follow me on Twitter or Facebook you may already know that I got laid off on October 1st due to some personal differences with the executive team at my old job

I was a Senior Systems Engineer with them for the last two years and had loads of fun with a variety of products and technologies, I had however been looking for something new, something that would challenge me since about March of this year, but you know how it goes when you have a job in this economy, you don't rock the boat too much (well I do, but ya know ;)

Despite the economical standing I was offered another job at a larger, nationwide competitor as a Senior Solutions Architect on the Microsoft team, although I will make sure my VMware skills don't go to waste
I am also retaining my Microsoft VTSP (Virtual Technology Solutions Professional) standing and will be assisting Microsoft sales staff in the PacNW region directly with architecture, solutions design and presales engagements
My new boss is also keen to see my public speaking appearances grow and I may be traveling across the nation on speaking engagements

I'm pretty stoked to get the new gig, it's always a little concerning to 'need' a job rather than 'finding the fit' at this point in my career, but I think my new role will be plenty exciting and give me a chance to get back in the enterprise space without having to leave Boise (one of my stern requirements!) and I think it's a stark testament to what experience and a great reputation still mean in the business space that I can walk into something in less than a week, with a nice compensation boost to boot. My clients have all been pretty great and helped spread the word too, in fact, as the local office here competed directly with my old employer there was plenty of overlap and my clients are glad they still get to work with me, that's a great feeling to have!

Thanks again for everyone that sent me well wishes and helped me on the path to a new gig, I have a lot of stokes will open but unless VMware offer me that position on their cloud team I think I'll stick where I am for the time being :)

Well done Ryan, your technical knowledge coupled with you being a nice guy clearly paid dividends.

May I be so bold as to ask why you want to remain in Boise? Sorry if that is forward, and I'm no expert on the US IT industry, but I'd of thought you won't be able to spread your wings fully until you embrace the city....

I love this small ass town :)

It's temperate, I can ski in the morning, scuba in the afternoon, be ATVing until dusk
all within a few miles of my house

I can go hiking for miles, I can ride my bike offroad all the way to Canada without hitting pavement

At my point in my career and not having a problem traveling I really can work from anywhere, a phone, a PC and Outlook Anywhere seem to be all i need ;)

Sounds fantastic mate, nice one for keeping such a great work life balance, you just need to get that pilots licence and you'll be James Bond!

Sweet! flying is something I've been wanting to try as well... we have a base just outside the city where you can do your training for a PPL (private Pilots License)... its a little expensive, around 4K but well worth if you're into that kind of stuff... At the moment I can't justify the 4K because I have other priorities but this is definitely something I am thinking on doing.
