    hi everyone

iv been lurking and reading several topics over the last few days, but have taken the plunge and registered.

Id like to say how helpful all the posts have been in prsuading me to self study for the A+ certification.

Iv purchased the Mike Meyers book for £17 from amazon and with excitement had the next day delivery for another £8 - so while the GF is watching location location and grand designs tonight, i`ll be reading something interesting.

    cheers

Shame they can't have a grand designs - micro arcitecture edition. :) Welcome to CF and good luck with the A+ it's a great point to start at. It's probably worth your while to have a good read through the A+ forum. There is some good pinned information on there.

Heya and welcome to the forums, best of luck with the A+

Tip: Try and set up/download/get some virtual machines going they'll help you understand things more and you can mess them up as much as you like, and work on troubleshooting them, and guess what... they can be reset with just a few clicks of the mouse (just remember to enable undo disks)!

You can download the VPC console, however, you need to make sure that you have a copy of the Operating System that you are going to install (i think you can purchase an Action Pack, some of the other members know what i'm on about!, or if you have a trial version of an operating system works just as well.)

they're good for application trouble shooting, messing around with command promt (for A+ you need to know some swtiches like the /all on the ipconfig /all command) and what happens when you modify a boot/system file with out causing damage to you own pc!

its good to hear that you have a spare pc to take apart and what not, try taking the machine apart, drawing/noting down what goes where and put it back together, great fun!:biggrin

In an nutshell, you have a program such as Microsoft Virtual PC, and within that software you can run 'virtual PC's'. So could have several copies of XP running within the virtual machine software. The virtual machines run effectively as they would if they were on real hardware and the host pc / virtual software interprets all the calls to the virtual hardware.

Very good way to set up a home test lab where you can experiment with different settings without breaking your host operating system. :)
