It is unclear to me why a (Thunderbird mail connection) shows up in netstat as a (firefox) connection. Is this common for netstat to misidentify the program making the network connection or are two programs some how bound together.

Firefox and Thunderbird are both made by Mozilla, very likely this is why netstat picks them up as the same thing.

    Josiahb thanks for the reply.

It is my understanding that netstat -b or netstat -p TCP -b will show the binary/ owner of the connection. I can clearly see mail ports being opened but netstat is showing firefox as the owner and not thunderbird.

No real pressure I was just doing some lab, practice and thought I would inquire about results. Now it seems to me this would be a problem if one was having a real issue.
