I have a couple of spare old drives they are only 40gb but i might use one of them to experiment with and see if i can get it going before going ahead and wiping my main one, they are IDE drives but that shouldnt make a difference should it?

    ok my next problem...
I have just realised that i dont have a windows installation disc with my pc!
I have contacted the store that i bought it from and am waiting to hear back from them, i have checked the pc case and i have the sticker on the side with the licence key on but no hard copy.
It also says that its a OEM what exactly does this mean?
Is there a way of making my own installation disc by copying windows to a dvd?

Your old pc probably has a recovery partition on it couple with some sort of backup disc but not a proper windows disk.

OEM is where you buy software such as windows with a piece of hardware, you get no support from microsoft where as you would with a retail version.

I doubt the store will give you a copy of Windows as they will have provided a backup/restore disk with the system.

You will have to buy a copy of windows.

Was the original PC a 'no-name clone', or did it have a name of a manufacturer on it?

Some PCs, as GBL has said, don't come with media - you are supposed to make your own. But those will *only* work with the original hardware.

If, on the other hand, this was a anonymous machine from a small builder then he should have given you the Windows CD with the machine.

well the machine has Advent on the front of the case and was bought from a very well known pc store chain.
I would have thought they have to give you the windows disc with any complete pc seeing as you have paid for it and what would happen if i wanted to re-install windows to fix any bugs etc?

it must have come with either their own restore disk or a recovery partition that is on the hard drive and you make your own backup disk.

When you buy a PC from a shop you very rarely get an original windows disk with it.

well the last time i bought a pc from a shop (before my current one) came with windows ME (which shows how long it was) and that came with a hard copy of windows, but i just asked a friend of a friend whos into computers and he basically said the days of getting a hard copy of windows when you buy a pc are long gone!
so it looks like i shall be buying a copy of vista then :dry

and that was a hard copy? i guess it depends where you buy it from and the sales people arnt quick at volunteering this info when they are selling you the computer!

thanks for the link i just had a look on ebay and you can pick them up a little cheaper on there, im gonna have to wait a couple of weeks to get it as the finances are a bit stretched right now.

Yeah, there was a DVD with the PC.

Some manufacturers are different though, my Lenovo laptop didnt come with any CDs but there is recovery software bundled with it where you can make restore disks yourself.

You might be able to buy the media for a fee.

Aha! I wondered if it was Advent. Those machines do *not* ship with a CD of the OS. Instead the docs tell you to burn your own recovery disks - usually pressing something like F12 during boot.

The resultant recovery disk will *only* work with the original hardware.

There should have been a slip of paper with the machine on how to do this.

Also there are docs pre-installed on the machine with more details.

Also look here for more info.
