This is something big. MS is reporting a 24% drop in sales of its OS during the same quarter which PC shipments grew 15%. Looks to me like the ship is beginning to list a little, and competitors are beginning to take good size bites out of MS's market share.

Remember those Amazon stats I posted showing Linux and Mac holding the something like 18 out of the top 20 spots in technology sales that require an OS? This is evidence that the conclusions I drew on that thread are correct.

Ooops. Here's the link to the rest of the article. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aQ7_iN1SxJ.c&refer=worldwide

They are in the billions and they are worried about dropping that little?:blink I wonder if it has anything to do with Vista. Although I know people that have bought xp pro just to down grade so that is 2 os that they sold for 1 computer. To be honest I would have thought it would of went up instead of down.

They could always lower their prices to boost sales. I doubt they'll do that though. They've become too accustomed to paying off politicians and lawyers and don't really know how to compete anymore.

I've had a sharp uptick in the number of people asking me to install bootleg copies of Windows XP on their boxen this past year (which I refuse to do). They usually calm down once they realize that I can still order XP for them.

I've yet to have a person ask me if I can get them a bootleg copy of Vista. You know your product sucks when people don't want to steal it.

I'd say they're worried about their stock price getting bent over a barrel and taking it up the hoop. Even if the company is still profitable as a whole, poor public perception of their flagship product will hurt MS and their stock price badly. That's what you get for being publicly traded.

Damndest thing: Been playing with Win2008 Server and it's much faster than Vista on the same hardware, even with the desktop experience enabled. These two products allegedly share the same codebase yet Vista chugs and puffs along compared to 2008. Anyone here know why?

They just dropped 1/4 of their total sales of their flagship product in one 3 month period. Any business ought to worried about losing 1/4 of their sales in that amount time. It doesn't matter if they have billions of dollars if they are losing market share like this. Remember, they lost 24% while shipments of new PC's went up 15% during the same time. That's more like a 30 - 35% loss in sales for MS when you take into account the growth of PC sales because that's where MS has made their fortune over the years. It used to be that every PC came bundled with Windows so that a 15% increase in PC sales meant an automatic increase in sales for MS. Now their sales are shrinking by big margins in an expanding market. This is the first time this has happened since MS rose to power.

I've seen this reported before - I'll try and see if I can remember where.
