Get all your subscriber friends to sign, the more the better of course - maybe (just maybe) MS will see the erred thinking? Doubtful but we can try 6220 signatures it would be great to see 10K

Signed! Not that it'll make a blind bit of difference mind you, MS appear to be designing their business strategy around 'things which will annoy IT pros' at the moment.

Bizarrely my boss is still pissed off with that one, he thinks if they were going to put the button back the menu should look like the old one. So basically he wants Windows 7.

From the chap running the change.org petition....

Thomas Lee and Jonathan Medd pointed out that Microsoft tried closing the MVP program once. The announcement caused uproar leading to MVPs organizing. They fought closing the program by writing Microsoft directly. Inboxes of Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and vice presidents soon flooded as supporters expressed the value of the MVP program. Three days later, Microsoft recanted and reinstated the MVP program. The event is chronicled here.

    MVP Program Reinstated

The parallels between their plight and ours are striking. Despite what skeptics say, we can convince Microsoft to keep TechNet open. Be courageous.

If you feel compelled to act, please write Microsoft. Start with Steve Ballmer. His email address should be [email protected]. Outline in your own words reasons for keeping TechNet open and its importance to you.

We need your help gathering email addresses. If you find any please share them.

    Respectfully,

I very much doubt it will get to Ballmer.

I always tended to think that when Jobs responded in his usual friendly way, it was a PR exercise to say "look, this is us actually listening"

    Hi all,

I hope that all is not lost following MS dropping technet. I have been trialing AWS for some of my labs. I know you can run basic instances on the AWS free tier for 12 months, anything that needs more resources can be done at a cost but as I'm sure most of you know you only pay while the instance is running. I know you don't get all the software that MS were providing with technet but I can see for the Server & Infrastructure related exams AWS could be a good alternative. I'm yet to play around with the more advanced stuff that amazon offers but for now I think I have got all I need for a lab.

For those not familiar with AWS (CBTNuggets) have got some great videos (respect to CBTNuggets for their all you can eat training plan) :)

Thanks for that sparky look at the original post I don't think he quite has a grasp on why we are annoyed by this move.

I've been wondering about awe as although my labs at home only use ms as a platform and I'm normally trialling and labbing other euc based software. So I'm not sure for example how east it is to set up a pxe environment to use with Citrix pvs. I know you can get Citrix instances etc on there so ill have to look a little more into it.

Saying that software will install software is all well and good but take mdt for example what so you have to do to get mdt to install software or task sequences, you have to script it which requires a lab and an it pro to sort it out. Automation is fantastic and is the future but you can't deny there's any awful lot of manual work that goes into automation.

Maybe if ms released azure for it pros at a similar cost so we could spawn as many instances as we wanted , keep them for as long as we want then I would be happier and it would allow me to keep hold of the pirate key issue a little tighter.

I remember when I started the MCSE on Server 2003 and I only had the trial version of Server at the time. It was a pain in the neck when it expired so when Technet came out it was great for me to get the MCSE done which took around two years.

Even the other day I was working on an Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 migration and when I installed Exchange 2003 it prompted for the original installation media. I didn’t have it so I quickly downloaded it from Technet – job done.

I don’t know why MS can’t offer Technet versions of Server 2012\Exchange 2013 – it doesn’t have to have the full capability of the full versions (e.g. limited mailboxes\AD accounts) but enough for training\testing.

My sub ends next month, but I got an E-mail this morning saying that it's been extended for 3 months. Seems to be legit, judging by this story. Interestingly, they mention older products being added to the Evals programme...

Thing is, how do they expect us to learn their technologies if this goes? A trial, yes thank you, but if I don't learn it quick I can never learn it at all.... If this is about them losing money in some way, use their super brains to figure out a way to not penalize those of us who have a legitimate lab at home. Those of us who just want to learn to progress our careers and become better professionals in the workplace. Sorry I'd not commented on this but echo everyones feeling that it is a terrible shame that will either push people to buy potentially dodgy copies on eBay or use someone elses software. With the likes of Ubuntu offering an increasingly impressive desktop and server range, I think Microsoft should listen to their patrons, us :)

While I'm consumed with nerdrage (quite harmless I assure you).

MCITP:EA final exam - Exam 70-647: Pro: Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator:
Born on the 3rd of April 2008, lived for 2129 days. It is 2129 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date or 5 years, 9 months, 28 days excluding the end date.

    Common 2003 MCSE exam - Exam 70-294:
Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure:
Born on the 28th of August 2003, lived for 3625 days. It is 3625 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date or 9 years, 11 months, 3 days excluding the end date.

Moral of the story, 2003 was totally awesome. 2008.....

    Cheers
