I've gone back to WMP 9 for all the web-based stuff. As I suspected, it isn't showing any signs of wanting to call home (yet) and does have the option to not monitor any folders.

'Songbird' was not a great success - but it's a beta, and will probably get better. But it's too bloated for my liking...

'Media Player Classic' looks good - simple and effective.

I got 'Real Player Alternative' to work properly, but am still playing with the 'QT alternative' - it sometimes refuses to play files...

I think that may be down to the newer versions of Qt files. I don't think QT Alternative can always play the latest versions of QT files. Sometimes you have to wait for an updated version. For me though, that's a small price to pay for not having Qt on my system.
