    Help me out here guys. My understanding is that MCDST is Desktop support technician for Windows XP, and to the same course in Vista you have to do the MCTIP.

    So after have looked up this, the way I understood is that the MCDST 70-271 is equel to MCTIPs 70-622, just different operating systems. And that MCDST 70-272 equels MCTIPs 70-623. And if you wanna upgrade your MCDST, you need to do 70-621. I know I havent put it in the most clear way, but am I right here?

    MCDST and MCTIP are totally different

    MCDST is'nt just XP it covers general applications and support technician skills, it doesn't expire either.

    MCTIP are more application focused, expire or have a life span of the product.

    When they stop MCDST, MCSE, MCSA they will still remain as qualifications . However, with MCTIP's your have to keep renewing or taking the latest.

    I cant remember the exact facts off the top of my head, i did do a post with links to the relevant sources a while back.

    Almost...

    The MCDST is based on the XP OS and Applications, the exams needed are the 70-271 & 70-272.

    The MCITP: EST is based on the Vista OS, the exams needed are 70-620 & 70-622 - this is for Technicans working in a domain environment.

    The MCITP: CST is also based on the Vista OS, the exams needed are 70-620 & 70-623 - this is aimed at technicans working in the non-domain environment (eg homes, workgroups, small businesses without a DC, etc).

    If you already have the MCDST, you can do the upgrade exam 70-621 to upgrade to the MCITP: EST (this covers exams 70-620 & 70-622), you can not upgrade to the MCITP: CST.

    The new MCITP track is more job orientated, while the MCTS are more technology orientated than the older MCP track (not to be mixed with the MCP Program), so you can't compare the old track with the new track (or really even exams) on a like for like basis. However the following is what replaces the old track of certs:

    MCDST -> MCITP: EST/MCITP: CST (no upgrade path for the CST)
    MCSA -> MCITP: SA
    MCSE -> MCITP: EA

    Even though it looks like it's a direct replacement, it isn't. Each new MCITP track is job orientated and job specific. For instance, just because one has a MCITP: EA, it doesn't mean that s/he has the same skill set of someone with a MCITP: SA and vice versa - the same thing goes for the MCITP: EST and the MCITP: CST.

    thanks for the replay. Yes I have MCDST right now. So the 70-620 is the base to start with when it comes to Vista help desk support. then you chose if you wanna move towards more on domain route with 70-622, or more small business work group enviroment with 70-623. But isnt both of this courses more of a first line jobs? I have done MCDST and it does cover basic knowledge for first liner, you get some basic knowledge on domain and work group, it just seem they have divided this with the MCTIP. Or am I completly wrong here?

    If you already have the MCDST, all you have to do is the 7-621 which is the upgrade of the MCDST, then if you want to also specialise in Consumer support then do the 70-623.

    As for MCITP: EST equal to the MCDST as first line job, not really... Added to that within first line, there are various levels within it:
