Food for thought: how can you manage a project when you've never worked on a project yourself?

The best project managers I've known were those who had been techs for years. They were well aware of pitfalls, potential (and realistic!) time constraints, and budget issues. The worst project managers were those who somehow landed a job after doing technical sales (or worse, had absolutely no experience at all) and didn't have the slightest idea about how actual project work was done.

Nobody says you have to stay at the bottom forever. In fact, with drive and determination, it is possible to advance rather quickly. I got to help administer servers in my first two jobs, and I became a senior systems admin within two years.

Keep in mind though: it's not a race. And there IS a bit of right-place-right-time luck involved. For example, just because PersonA got a network admin job in 6 months doesn't mean it'll be the same for you... nor does it mean that you'll be doomed to work a call center job for 5+ years like PersonB did.

I'd also second the reply that mentioned volunteering, I got my first role in IT with that volunteering work on my CV. I volunteered at my local college over the summer, only a couple of weeks full time and then a few days here and there later on but they had loads of projects on that needed people to move stuff about. It's not necessarily tech experience but is a good way of getting to know people, quite a lot of companies are just employing people they know at the moment round here.
I made my own networks at home, got known as someone that could help with computers, put that all on my CV with the volunteer work and it got me my first IT job :-)

All the advice is great and I appreciate it. I think back to when i started my bsc then did a Masters I guess I had high hopes for my first job. But with the market being the way it is and competition is so fierce, my lack of experience counted against me regardless of me having a masters.
Thanks, im lining up some work experience next month, its not a job but hopefully it will help!

Later in your career, that Masters might come in handy. :) I've been kicking around the thought of getting a Masters for the past few years now...

I know it hasnt helped me get a job now, but I thought I might as well do it as I always wanted to, and i did enjoy it more than my undergrad degree. I would say do it, you could always do it part time, there were alot of part timers on my course who would come after work for an evening lecture or whatever.

Yeah, I may knock it out sometime... got a bunch of other irons in the fire at the moment. Plus, I really enjoy being a dad... once the kids get older, I might be able to squeeze in some classes. :)

I was in that position I remember applying for over a hundred jobs in one day and only receiving a couple of emails requesting details for agencies to add me to their books .......... Then i got some certs and now I get probably 5 responses from every 20 applications, and offered interviews to jobs i didnt apply for on a monthly basis.......... Although im now happily in the role I wanted since graduation!

Get some certs while you got the time and show your interested in developing yourself int he areas you wish to pursue!
Did you take my advise in my response to your last post?

I realise I havent added to his thread, anyway. I completed my internship and got back over a month ago.

Im still applying for jobs but I have an interview (although no date is set yet) in the near future. Im in contact with some people within the company so I am looking forward to that.

I apologise who it was now, but someone advised me in my job hunt to have some sort of structure. ie. monday look on monster and jobserve etc. Tuesday cw, totaljobs etc

For me this is the best method i can advise to anyone, I use mon-friday as if its my job, I get up have my coffee watch a bit of tv, then hit some target I set myself. Its the best way i find of doing it, otherwise if you try and attempt in one go its impossible.

I hope everyone else's' job hunt is proving successful.

I found a productive way to apply for jobs was use the email alerts. I set up a few with keywords and I would get the jobs after midnight. I would apply for them and in some cases recieve a phonecall in the morning or a few days later.

I have tried that, but often the jobs arent relevant, but I will give it another try.
