Londons unofficial population is closer to 20M people and only covers an area half the size of rhode island
London is not referred to as 'The City' the square mile in the heart of it is known as 'The City' which is short for 'The City of London' i assume

Most of the rest of the UK call it 'The City' but anywhere outside of that would probably not differentiate between 'The City' and the rest of London, so it's not often referenced in that manner outside the UK

Families up north do or atleast ones living on the outside of philly. I grew up hearing people say I have to go into the city today. Everyone knew they ment philly. Its not just a brit saying.

However, I don't know what your charles is complaining about. There isn't that many there. You guys have plenty of room to build it up from what I can tell from that picture.

Sticking my head in the lions mouth here but we (UK) have a lot of old fuddy-duddies (don't ask for a definition!! :) ) that want to keep the UK like it "always" has been, ie, as they remember it before it was "corrupted". We need to keep history, and we need to be reminder of the past but a large number of people think that advancement or general moving forward is negative thing - old charlie boy is one of this gang (that said, he is sometimes on the ball with the environmental issues)

I hate it when people refer to London as the city, the sh*tty seems more appropriate to me, bloody women drivers and their 4x4s that they can't drive, and the taxi drivers can't driver either and Ken livingston need a good kick the tits.

As for the skyline I'm not bothered but it wont look as blue as that, maybe a brown colour then they can call it the sh*tty. :p

To be fair, its England's capital city, so if any city in England can be called "the city" its London. 8)

GBL, there are plans to make the congestion charge £25 for "gas guzzlers" soon so hopefully that might reduce the number of the things! :(

It is a rip off, they're just trying to make more people use public transport, which barely works most days anyway!

    Really?
Whenever I'm there the public system looks good. At least the 'tube' looks great. In comparison, the subway system here looks like a children's playground ride (about the same size too  ).

I havent been on the tube in LOndon since I was about 9 so I can't comment but the buses and trains are the same all over the country a load of cra*p, they are dirty smelly and the people driving them can't drive I wouldn't go on a bus if you paid me.

I'd risk a train but thats only because the driver doesn't have to use a steering wheel to go around corners.

I travel on the 'tube' every day, and have to say that it is pretty reliable.

There was a short period when there was major disruption, and during that time I used one of the 'bendy-buses' instead. I found that OK - and certainly neither dirty or smelly!

Recently I had to use a different bus route to get to another office. Not only was that just as easy, but the indicators at the bus stop correctly predicted when the bus would appear, and there were info displays in the bus telling you what each stop was. Now I may be nostalgic for the old 'Routemaster' buses, but I was most impressed!

One thing I can say for London (and a lot of people disagree, the grass is always greener and all that) but Londons transport system is one of the most diverse and spanning urban transport networks in the world, and to be fair its not half bad! not being a driver, I have often been forced to use the public transport systems of most the countries I have visited, and with the exception of a few places with rather limited service, but great systems, London is by far the best

not only is it incredibly frequent, its general upkeep and timekeeping are also top notch when judging the system as a whole, take it from someone who uses it every day (and bitches a lot, like everyone who uses it every day) I still would take it over some of the other systems I have used any day

It DOES need improvement, and investment, the tube more so than ever, but the scope of an overhaul to the tube system is rather hard to imagine let alone go ahead with, the biggest improvement the tube has seen in the last century was the jubilee line extension, which was nothing compared to an entire system overhaul, and we all know the complications that entailed!

I'd agree it is pretty reliable and decent when looking at it seriously, but there are problems which need looking at without doubt.

Comparing it to other tubes I've seen in places like Rome, Paris, New York etc, it doesn't fall short of any of them, while having a very extensive network of lines in comparison. It is *alot* more expensive though, oyster or not!

This gas guzzler rubbish is a pain. In fact, last week someone mentioned any car which did under 35mpg is now a gas guzzler (prolly office chat here mind), so thats all the old 1.8 focus's out of the window (31 by the book, about 28 in relaity). Thank god mine goes on friday for a diesel.

I rather like the high rise office blocks, they make them look interesting and it shows what we can do. Anyone seen the one in Manchester with its strange sticking out bit, that looks quite interesting.

My car does between 33 and 35 depending on how its driven, its far better off in longer journeys than short ones but no idiot spouting crap that my car is damaging the environment will stop me driving it,

The 35MPG thing is being proposed for any cars newer than 2001. People often like to rip into these suggestions without actually examining them in detail.

To be honest I'm not sure what's wrong with the system of taxing poor economy cars we already have. We pay a huge chunk of tax on every litre of petrol and diesel we use so cars that use a lot of fuel, pay a lot of tax and vice versa.

The best way to encourage economical car use though I think is not to punish those with crap economy, but to reward the ones that have good economy. A bit like the road tax system now. Car's under 120 g/km of C02 only cost £35.00 for a year. Plenty of cars now qualify for this now, including one of my cars (Peugeot 107).

Aren't most people trying to forget that they ever saw such a turkey of a movie? As a directorial follow up to Leon, it's the worst steaming turds that Luc Besson has directed IMO.

Sure, when compared to Leon, it's... eccentric at my most polite. But there's something about the Fifth Element I love. I cannot explain it, it's just a film that grabbed me, and kept me, and still makes me smile. As it's in a completely different genre to films like Leon, I tend not to directly compare them  :p
