    Yeah Fergal your right in what you say and as always think up a great analogy. Also Harry great link, Kobem if you look at the link Harry has given it should answer you question.

    i looked at the diagram yesterday you have given to me.

    on pc1 at layer 2 ... format is layer2 header, ip header , tcp/udp header , upper layer headers , upper layer (application) data , layer2 footer

    how is this in router at layer 2 ? which of these are removed at layer 2 in router(in time router received it)

    The router receives it as shown in the "Layer 2 frame" part. It strips off the layer 2 stuff to give the part labeled "IP Datagram". It then inspects the IP headers and decides what to do with it. Before it sends it out it puts a new wrapping of layer 2 round the IP datagram.
