Agreed, I think careers advice has always been dire in the UK because as you say there is no real connection between real people / careers and school kids / students. Now at least there are a few job style programs on TV for youngsters to get a taste.

Generally I feel the middleclass has a natural advantage in this area as parents tend to provide a better perspective on whats available in terms of potential careers, a young person may see their parents peergroup and actually meet professionals from different realms. They will have also been through the system, although I've seen some mention this means that they gave bad advice like 'get a degree' as the system and workforce has changed since the last generation.
