    Thanks Lord Deckard..

the bios only shows onboard AC97 Audio Controller - which is on auto.

When I go into nvidia nforce control panel and click on the speaker setup wizard, i make sure the desktop speakers are selected and not the dolby 5.1.

another interesting point! is the asus MOBO has a audio post warning(usually an american womans voice). I have enabled this, so it should play though the pc case speaker, but nothing happens.

The Beep is not there either when the MOBO goes to post!

I have had a chat with the owner and he said the sound did work but.....when playing a DVD, there was back ground noise?

    UCM

Standoffs is that those rubber washer things, because they came in a bag with some strange looking screws?
Unlike the skyhawk PC case (which came with a manual) the Antec case only came with a schemtic diagram of the case.

    Thanks for the advice :biggrin

No - standoffs are metal pillars that the motherboard sits on.

One of the frequent probs is where the standoffs are in unusual positions, causing shorts on the motherboard laid on them.

I have never met a motherboard that could have two such different chipsets with the same model number. And ASUS is a very reputable make - so I wouldn't expect it of them!

Checking the ASUS site I find that the model number you gave has a NVIDIA chipset!

Do you mean those metal posts that the screws go into to hold down the MOBO?

I have the same mobo and have had the same problem before too. First of all I'd check that the connecting wires are all in the right places i.e. for the usb to the usb pins on the mobo etc and also for the sound ports.

Then check that the speakers are in the green jack.

Go into the control panel and to the sounds applet and in the audio tab check that the default device in the sound playback is set to the Nvidia nForce Audio, and the same in the voice tab.

Via MOBO is used for intel Click here to read

There's a big problem with via chips, I was told to steer clear of them and stick to sis chips! :biggrin

Well - I'd agree that VIA aren't always the best chipsets around.

But I don't see anything on the link about your motherboard! :blink

And the model number you posted is for an AMD board?

    Harry, check it out here.

Sorry that it's in german though.

Edit: sorry just wanted to say that it is for an AMD and not Intel, but with different chipsets.

Fortunately I have a little german!

But I'm getting confused here. That is yet another model of motherboard. I'm not sure why you are pointing me at it?

The one that UCM has is this one .

Actually I mean't there's A7N8X-E - nvidia there's A7V8X -deluxe ver 2.0 then there's A7S8X. It's the same MOBO but one has nvidia, one has sis, one has via chips!

I have remove that statement, because it's causing too much confusion! Sis chips - asus A7S8X , Via -asus A7V8X and Nvidia - A7N8X-E. It's practically the same board!

That's what I am trying to say one is deluxe with extra bolt ons the others are not, one of them doesn't have the dolby stereo!

    Anyway lets...

Id have to go with checking the MOBO settings from the USB settings. Make sure they are connected to Ground 1, Ground 2, VCC1.VCC2. etc etc. make sure they are connected properly.

Ive not seen a reply stating you had checked this.

    Good Luck

Thanks mate, However the problem has been solved, the pc speaker connection was not push in to the correct pins (thanks to sparky for that one!) Also as soon as I unplugged the front USB connection leads, the sound came back)

So thanks for all your help everyone! :thumbleft
