Ken had me thinking about roles that I really wanted to get in my career.

I started off as a mainframe operator so for the first ten years of my career, I wanted to be a mainframe systems programmer. A Sysprog. They were the cool guys on the most money all of those years ago.

Thankfully I didn’t become a Sysprog, which makes me think that sometimes something better is in store for you. The next job I wanted really badly was to become a Wintel engineer. I got this role and I think it was easily one of the most enjoyable roles I’ve ever had. That feeling when you win an award for saving the day on call of a weekend. A brilliant job that started my journey to working for VMware.

Did you almost take a role or think there was one that you wanted back in the day? Are there any now that you thank your lucky stars that you didn’t get? I remember Lotus Notes admins being popular back in the day. I’m not so sure that’s as popular as it once was :sos:

Wanted to be a Cisco engineer for a while – did get some exposure to Cisco kit in my job at the time but not enough to get near the enterprise Cisco kit. Pay for Cisco engineers was good back in the day as well!

Worked one contract as a Domino\Lotus notes admin many years ago. I was migrating four Server 2003 Windows domains into one and Domino was being used for email and some internal systems (intranet etc.). It was a powerful product and I ended up upgrading from Domino 5 to 8 after the Windows domain migration was completed. Just had a look online and looks like IBM has sold the product to HCL technologies so things have changed for sure. :)

When I first left school I wanted to be a quantity surveyor but I wasn't good at math's which was quite important! IT wise I did want to go down the networking route but my manager recommend security and I took that route instead, which I am glad I did.

Did the exact same thing this week. HCL. I’ve not heard of many still using it sadly. I hope it’s alive and kicking still

Bound to be some corporates that have a domino server running a legacy database somewhere. :)

Would be surprised if it is still been used for email as there was a few migration tools to migrate to Exchange back in the day.

I wanted to be a computer games programmer when I was in school, got offered games programmer roles but didn't want to take the pay cut so never did it. I wanted to be a Quant Dev for a bit, but decided against that also.

I worked one place with ICL mainframe, the mainframe programmers there were retards, didn't know what a stack, pointer, memory address, file handle, basically nothing. They knew COBOL and how to launch a mainframe app, nothing else.

Ah yes I reckon most of us wanted to be in the gaming industry at some point didn't we. The salaries are surprisingly low aren't they, or they used to be. Not sure if they are now.

I remember one cobol programmer saying to us once. We were getting rid of the huge impact printers that used to print on that piano style paper, with the lines and holes on the sides. He said don't get rid of it, install it at the end of my desk! They were about six foot wide and five foot tall ha ha not normal this fella, wish I could remember his name

Oh for a time I wanted to be a Penetration Tester. I'd probably watched Swordfish and thought, I can work out of a nightclub if that's what goes down, no problem :troll:

Indeed – remember reading an article in IT Pro (I think!) years ago that highlighted that most IT consultants would be recommending Office\Microsoft 365 – this is true.

Changed days for sure – almost possible to do most IT tasks in the Office 365 admin centre rather than having to connect to various servers like it was back in the day.

What do you mean? You're not a jedi now...? I'm pretty sure if you frequent Certforums, your Midi-chlorian count is quite high...
