My dvd burner keeps flying open.:x We thought it might have been me at first because I am use to the bays being in front and not on the side. And I have a habit of laying my left plam right on the corner with my forefinger straight out and the rest sorta drape over the side. However, I was just sitting with my left hand under my leg and it just flew open! This is not normal is it? Any ideas or solutions? I really don't want to have to call dell and talk to someone who only pretends to know english.

I did a Google on this but what I came up with is that it seems to be a common problem when a computer first boots. The problem seems to occur a lot in Macs and sometimes in Windows 98 and XP. I couldn't find anything (my search was brief, though) where the drive bay just spontaneously opens during normal operation. It's either at start up or when it can't read a disc (pops it right back out).

The only thing I can suggest is to Google "DVD drive opens" and "DVD drive ejects" and start reading through the search results to see if any of the symptoms (and hopefully the solutions) apply to your situation. Some suggestions I ran across including a virus problem and a hardware conflict.

Check to make sure the drawer is properly fitted.

I've looked at lappys before where the plastic draw face comes unseated.
This dosn't allow the drawer to fully retract.

Thanks Trip and Spilly. Dells has their own forums to I think I will head over there and see if anyone else lappy is doing the same thing. I really hope I don't have to send it back. :(

Have you installed any recent disc buring software?

Try unistalling the drive, and rebooting the machine. I will have a look at work tomorrow, see if this is an issue.

    p.s check event log

In all seriousness, I think it's because of her dangling fingers.

I would agree with you mike that this could have been a posability expect that the button is a good inch back from where my fingers dangle and it doesn't explain it popping open when my hand is no where near it. However, though, for some strange reason it has not pop open at all tonight. Maybe it was the threat of going back to dell?

Thank you Jon I appreaciate it. But if your busy don't worry about it. I did look on the dell forums and they seem to have more prombs with the drives not opening. :biggrin Is that not my luck. Anyway I hope it is settling down now. We shall see.

*muffles under his breath* thats what you get for a cheap Dell lappy

I can honestly I have never had this problem on my laptop but then its not a *ahem* DELL *ahem*

All jokes aside, the lads look like they have this covered for you Mitzs, it will only be a matter of time before a solution is found and also the reason for this happening. Just keep your fingers to yourself in future :biggrin

    Hey Mitzs,

Are you on the internet when it happens? I know there are some backdoor trojans that can do this trick remotely. Maybe someone is teasing you.

No I really don't belive I have a trojan Tinus. I have avg and counterspy which is updated daily and run nightly. Not to mention I just don't surf to many places to pick up one nor do I open attachments. It has not done it in the last 2 days so I'm thinking it may have been me where I'm use to front bays and not on the side. I'm just not sure.
