since having a network card (a thats a long time now) i have always had a ip address of

    192.168.1.x

    or

    192.168.254.x

but now yesterday i hooked up my old modem (safecom) and it has now given me an ip of 10.0.0.x

    why?

Are you getting a Static address or one served from dhcp? it seems that it may be the latter and your old modem is configured to issue addresses on an alternate range than your used to?

Is this an ADSL modem? if so is it also acting as the DHCP server?

Sounds to me like the modem, if it is acting as a DHCP server is simply configured to distribute a different range of addresses than you are used to.
