    Hi all,

As some of you already know I work for my local council as a tech and currently i'm placed in a school to improve the current setup in anything IT related. Now that nearly everything is up and running pretty well my next task is to implement a meant of regulating the internet usage.

My question is does anyone know of a program to regulate internet access, we need features such as the abilty to blacklist sites, dictate the times internet is allowed and to who it is allowed. Track usage (ideally by user log -on so intergrated with W2K-AD).

If any of you have any comment then please drop a post.

    Thanks in advance,
    SimonV

    Si,

We use Surfcontrol and it's excellent, it does everything you listed on your wish list. The only thing is the cost, it ain't cheap but you get what you pay for.

Hi Si, Hope you enjoyed your hols

I have had a little chat with our Network Administrator, and we are using Microsofts ISA server as a proxy, you can accomplish all of the things that you mentioned in you post, including baring web sites by WORD content, works with AD too.

I think Microsoft used to let you download a 180 day elavuation copy from there site

    Hi SimonV

We use a Navaho proxy server for our internet control. It integrated with AD and does all of our content filtering. You can setup groups so that, as in our case, the kids can only go to certain pages with certain content, teachers can go else where and superusers can do what they like (that's me :D ).

It does have a built in fire wall, VPN service plus lots of other goodies. But like other have said, it ain't cheap.

I'll ask the boss tomorrow. I do know that Navaho do do a special school proxy server with a few added extra's.

    Be in touch

Right then, I've just spoken the our Network Manager and he thinks that it cost somewere in the region of £2K. We have just upgraded it to the latest version, I think that it runs on a version of linux, although as a user you use a Web based interface and the upgrade was so that we were using the latest version of the OS (does that make sence?). The upgrade was in the region of £800. We also pay a maintenance charge of around £1K. This is def worth the money as all it needs is a phone call and they deal with the problem straight away, normally remotely (never had them out on site yet).

If you haven't already been there http://www.navaho.co.uk

    Anything else please ask

Thanks Andrew, saves me calling them and getting bugged. We are only in the stage of looking so that info helps me to put something together for our network manager.

    Cheers, SimonV :thumbleft

    Si

Did you get to see Navaho like you said you were on NITLC message forum.

If you do need to see it then you would be more than welcome to come over to Oundle to see it in action if you want.

I never got the time, Things have been WAY too busy here. I've rearanged to go down in two weeks as things look busy still to come.

Thanks for the offer Andrew, I'm going to visit a school not far from me (about 7 miles) but if they dont know all that much about the administration of it I'll pick you up on the offer. Some schools have things fitted then leave it till it breaks down, but I want the full inside guide.

If I need more info and the boss will give me the time off I'd love to take up your offer. Thanks.

And if it ain't there, we bring it with us - see you shortly.
