    It's quite an interesting subject.

In some cases it may be laziness, poor education, language barriers etc - but I also think it reflects cultural changes.

Pretty soon us what think you should talk propper will be in the minority and then people will start having a go at us...

I was recently on the CBBC forum (for those that don't know, CBBC is the childrens channel from the BBC) - relax, I've got kids, that's why - and it was shocking. I couldn't read a single post.

Until the revolution does come along, people do need to remember that the people doing the hiring, firing and appraising of your performance will be dinosaurs that will appreciate proper spelling and grammar...

The "dinosaur" comment made me think. What if we really are headed for a "dumbing down" of the written language across the board. What if a generation from now, everyone will be writing everything in text speak.

Then I realized that will only be true for personal and informal ways of written communication. It won't happen for professional documentation because no one would trust someone who couldn't spell or use at least half way proper grammar.

Imagine you're trying to solve some sort of IT problem. You Google the symptoms and get a list of search results. You start visiting the various sites trying to see which ones have credible solutions. You narrow it down to two sites.

One contains content that is well written and organized. The other is full of misspelled words and poorly constructed sentences. Which one would you consider to be more credible?

The same goes for books, white papers, technical magazines and articles. Even if you get all of your information off of the Internet, you've still got to be able to read it and one of the ways you will judge whether or not that information is valid is how it is written.

The dinosaurs aren't extinct. The next generation is growing up to provide your professional content, whether it is the news, technical journals, legal documents, and so on.

    Translated:-

The problem is that as with all languages, english gets adapted and changed. If text speak carries on then it will be the language of choice for many (in the next few gens i mean)
You only have to take a look at Latin, That was a common language at one point and now has almost died out and been replaced.

Its even at the stage now where you can get online txt spk Translators as used above!

Technically wrong; a lot of Latin words are more recognisable in the words we use today, in a multitude of languages, than olde English is recognisable to a fluent English speaker today.

Example: an untranslated excerpt of Chaucer:

Whereas from the Latin, a lot of words are still in use, without translation, or only with minor adjustment. Egress, digress, amble (from ambulare, to walk)... there is a potentially huge list. I won't go on, as it'll make me sound like a git.

Languages change and adapt with each generation. The Chaucer example above is a great one; 600 years ago, that extract above was mainstream language on our sunny shores. I agree with Trip, in that official documentation won't succumb to text speak, and other malignant forms of writing :) but you won't be able to stop people from communicating the way they want to away from the mainstream.

As long as I can still read it, I don't mind. Poor spelling and grammar is, admittedly, a pet hate of mine. But having spent the best part of the last 8 years modding and administrating boards, I long ago learnt to put away my pitchfork. Unless someone uses text speak. Then, they possibly die.

Interesting thread and reading everyone's view on the subject.

But we all have to make sacrifices in life and if it means putting up with the things that annoy us like Trip (....Just Kidding!!:p :biggrin ) then so be it!!
