Opinions are like ..... oh, never mind.

I'm sensing a bit of thin skin right here, and for no other reason than spilled milk. Like d-Faktor alluded to, both parties need to have the thick skin, even when someone slips up and lobs a 'personal' grenade. It happens. We deal with it, and move on. Several times I've put my ethics *and* morals on the table, and people have flamed me for it. However, for every single person that's uncomfortable by it, others may feel edified. I don't intend to ruffle feathers, but it is what it is, and I can only hope that my intentions are clear and truthful. Fact is, if the truth hurts, or you don't want my input, then just ignore it. I'm not going anywhere, and neither should you, particularly considering the strong show of support. Most people find you beneficial at CF, it seems, and very few find you a hindrance. Mob rules, or it should, for a change.

This animosity started over you being critical of MS? Maybe you come across like a typical linux admin, and that itches a windows peep immensely. Typical Ford vs. Chevy. However, I knew you pre-linux, and even when you were MS-filled, the draconian licensing (among other things) chaffed greatly. Me, I enjoy both systems, use several iterations of both, and think neither is perfect. However, people tend to defend what they know, and sometimes don't see the forest for the trees (or whatever that crazy metaphor is). Regardless, and this is the bottom line -- there are too few linux admins willing to give the time and patience to an MS junkie, and that makes you very marketable ... particularly to a site like this. Besides, sometimes we need a bit of drama to get the blood flowin' :)

Fortch is a dandy Blue. He is a guru on several Topics, specially cars. He is also a very wise man. There is always something to be learn from him when he is serious about something. I've never seen him give bad advice on anything. And he has a way of phasing his outlook that never offends another. Wish I had that talent myself. :biggrin Yep Forthc a good one and nobody can do nothing but benafit while around him.

I accept this point entirely Freddy - perhaps I started with the wrong choice of words (or IM-speak, in this case). However, the tone of my post was intended to be light-hearted and conciliatory - you know as well as I, you don't fully know how it will be percieved after you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

Ok. No problem then. We understand each other on this. I just wanted to see if you really understood how what you said had been percieved and why, as I would have never phrased a response to a serious post the way you did, but that's just me.

It's the medium itself that creates a lot of the communication difficulties we see on forums. A large percentage of how we percieve communication is auditory and seeing the body language of the person speaking. This medium closes those two avenues so all that's left is the literal wording.

That is very true, you can not tell peoples true emotions through emails, messages, sms's, etc, althought those smiliies do help at times...

You know, Freddy - Trip embodied exactly this very sentiment in the first week of CF's existence back in early summer 2003 - if I can dig out the post, I'll edit the link in here. Edit: CF history

I'm glad we are close to agreeing to disagree - that said, I am closely following your other thread in the Lounge as you raise some extremely interesting points .... I will say no more.

Freddy, I don't know if you are a tee-totaller, but if not, can I buy you a beer ?

LOL. If you had asked me that 20 years ago I'd have beaten you to the local bar/pub.

I've been a tee-totaller now for.... Hmmm.... I have to think on this as it has been a while.... If my memory serves me right it's been 14 years since I've had a drink. Best 14 years of my adult life too, even with all the crap I've had to go through in the last 5 years....

The day I stopped partying for good was the day my life really began. Until then I lived for one thing--seeing just how high I could get and for how long.... Many, if not all, of my health problems can be directly traced to the life I used to live. :(

Now I'd take you up on a nice cold lemonade or even a tall glass of good cold water.

Kinda hard to believe this conservative was once a flaming liberal ain't it?

    off topic but ..

ya know. its scary in a way how many people actually say things like that.

I love my beer, but I'd be damned scared to think I loved it so much I couldn't do without it or I partied so hard it became my life...

interesting thread by the way, and freddie, you may be controvertial, but thats good and welcome back!

If you can't understand the statement, it's because you are not an addict. Any addict, who is being honest with themselves and you at the moment, will tell you the same thing I said. Most of us live/lived to destroy ourselves because the power of drugs, alcohol, and the addict's lifestyle robs the addict living in active addiction of any sense of self-respect. It's by no accident that the three destinations of all addicts in active addiction are jail, death, and being institutionalized.

I guess I wasn't clear Freddie. I work with 2 addicts and I have heard their perspective a lot as they are quite open about it. I think trainers are a bit obsessive in their own way! My point was really how commonplace addiction is. I didn't mean to imply I had no comprehension. TBH, in the past once or twice I indulged so much I questioned myself was I an addict. In hindsight, it was sheer boredom and loneliness that made me drink so much. Once I had better things to do and someone to do them with I cut down a hell of a lot...

Ok. I misunderstood what you were saying then. It sounded as though you couldn't comprehend it.

To tell the truth, I can barely comprehend it myself and I lived it for a couple of decades.... I understand the why's and how's but when it comes right down it I still wonder at the power of it.

I'm a Christian, and the only other parallel I find in human behavior is with sin. Sin is completely self-destructive too, and yet we human beings love it, we revel in it. A human being can absolutely understand that he is heading towards the wrong destination in the end, and just not care because he/she likes the reward sin gives at the moment. That fits addiction to a tee--live for the impulse of the moment and damn the consequences....
