Have you networked these PCs before? I am thinking you have a connectivity problem that is hardware related. Possibly the *cable*, or one of the NICs might be dodgy.

I dont know man, but the stange thing though is that when I try to connect remote to the client computer remotely, the the server computer receives only 4 packets and the client receves none.

Do you have a hub or switch of any kind that you can try to use rather than the crossover cable?

Although it should do the job I have had problems trying to network two devices with just a crossover cable that was quickly resolved using a hub.

    Sorry, but got to ask...

Have you added the computer you can't see to "computers" within the relevant domain in active directory?

SORRY - just read the whole thing properly - realised you already tried above!

I got the same error message for joining to the domain, and it was adding the client to the domain admin group that solved my issue. Entirely different set up though:

    Server:

    IP: 192.168.20.5
    subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway (nothing as virtual pc so on work domain)

Use the following DNS server address

    Preferred (nothing)
    Alternate (nothing)

(Set up as DNS server via "manage server")

    Client:

    IP: 192.168.20.7
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: (Nothing as above)

Use the following DNS server address
    Preferred: 192.168.20.5
    Alternate: (nothing)

    Client also has:

Network connections\ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)\Properties\advanced\DNS: "register this connections address in DNS"

"Use this connections DNS suffix in DNS registration"...

and I joined the client to the domain via: My computer/properties/ computer name - usual way...

Again thank you, please fill free to send me any advice you might still have.

try delete the computer account in AD and have it automatically create when you join it (requires domian admin credentials to join the domain)

Hmmm, I thought you didn't need any special privilages for the first 10 computers joined to the domain - after that you need the privilage *join computers to the domain* (something like that, maybe add?. IIRC you don't need to be domain admin

in order to create the domain account im sure you need privilages

you dont NEED domain admin credentials true, but in a lab setup like this its far easier than delegation/role assignment
