Got the HTC Desire yesterday, set it up and using it now, really good phone I am impressed. Getting used to it now as previously had Nokia N97.

Set it up on my Wireless at home. Is there a way to quickly swap to mobile internet as and when i need it?

Also where do i go to look for stuff to download? :)

You'd probably find the settings widget handy for that:

    Hold your finger on screen.
    Choose Widget option.
    Choose Settings -
Drop down menu gives you a choice of Wi-fi, Mobile Network, GPS, Bluetooth & Airplane mode.
They display as little sliders you manipulate to turn on or off. I chose the Mobile, Wifi and GPS ones and it really saves your battery.

Got my Desire this week on Orange. A few musings...
Anyone else notice how reflective the screen is!?
The camera looks really good, havent tested it out fully yet though.
Its annoying how i cant uninstall some of the standard apps.(Peep, Footprints, Flickr) I dont twitter have no intention to start.
I also noticed the speaker isnt as good as the iphone (i have one for work)
I think with the sense UI its looks alot nicer than the iphone.

I want the Froyo update as well but im not gonna start rooting my phone just yet.

Oh and have people insured their device and do you sheath or go bare?

Bareback for me, but I am insured with one of those bank account deals with the phone, travel insurance etc.

Keeping my eye out though for a decent thin leather flip case.

I've bought a sleeve from e bay for under £3 delivered, just so the screen doesn't get scratched while its in my bag. Other than that I don't like putting covers on phones.

I think of insurance as gambling, you gamble the phone will break, the insurance company is betting it wont. I've never broken a phone yet (touch wood) so I'm hoping I don't start with this one!

Just got my HTC Desire yesterday, haven't really had a chance to sit and poke around it properly yet. Love what I have seen so far though. Shame about the 18 month contract though, oh well...

I know a few people who got this phone and really like it... If I wasnt getting a free BB from work, I would definitely look into this phone. It has great reviews/features and looks really cool!

anyone here rooted their phone, and if so, how did it go?

Waiting for my second Desire, as my first Desire on Orange failed to charge or power up.

SHould be with me tomorrow, but have been doing loads of research on rooting through androidforums etc

there is a lot of info out there, but from what I can gather, it allows you low-level access to the OS.

Once rooted you can install a custom ROM with enhanced speed/features, or a custom 2.2 Froyo ROM.

Also allows you to save apps to your SD card, thereby freeing up internal memory.
Although some threads I have seen indicate that this is not necessarily the case.

Of course all this is academic at the moment, while I wait to get a bloody Desire that works!

Love my desire and love Robo Defense! Hopefully we'll start seeing more games like the iPhone has because apart from that £D baseball game I haven't seen many "pretty" games. Copilot is ace for GPS type stuff : )

Yup this and also there are some good apps that only run on rooted phones. Titanium Backup is one. It allows you backup your apps to your sd card so that you don;t have to manually install your apps through the market again.

Also with a rooted phone you can take a snapshot of your phone and restore it if you need to.

Storing apps on the sd card still uses space on the internal memory but not much. I believe it stores some kind cache or database or something.

Some of the apps and games I have and recommend:

3G Watchdog - monitor net usage
    AK Notepad
App Lock - password protect text messages, apps etc ;)
    Astro - file manager
Autorotate - widget to turn autorotate on/off
    Barcode Scanner
    Bonsai Blast
    Calendar Pad
Callend Vibrate (not sure if the Desire has this as a built in feature, I have a Hero btw :D)
    Delete old messages
Documents To Go - read excel and word docs
    Engadget
    EStrong File Explorer
ExportContacts - export contacts to csv file
    Flashlight
    Graviturn
    Iconic Memory
Keepscreen - keep the screen on app by app basis
    Labyrinth lite
    Layar
    Yahoo Mail
    MSN Talk
    Post It Desk
SportyPal - this is great for stuff like walks, bike rides etc.
Startup Manager - for rooted phones like msconfig :)
    TaskPanel - task manager
Where's my droid - turns your silent phone on when you text it. Handy when you are in a rush but can't find your phone because you left it on silent :D
