    Hi all

I'm thinking about switching to a career in IT support and doing the A+ course as a starter. However, I've just hit 48 and am aware that in some areas of IT (e.g programming?), being that sort of age can be a problem when applying for jobs. Does that apply to systems support/maintenance roles?

I'd welcome your honest opinions :D

    Thanks!

    Hi and welcome to CF!

Only poor companies worry much about age. If you can do the job then age doesn't matter. (For the record - I'm a decade older! And I'm a programmer.)

However - one of the problems about breaking into new employment is that you start at the bottom, with wages to match. If you are a kid living at home this doesn't matter so much. If you are older and have financial outgoings such as a mortgage then this can be horrid.

The main things you need are enthusiasm and drive. Don't go into IT because you think it might pay well.

    Harry.

I don't care how old someone is... if they can do the job, I want them on my team.

As Harry said, if you're just starting out in IT support, you'll likely have to take an "entry-level" wage, which is usually difficult to take at the age of 48 unless you have no debt.

    Welcome!

Hi & Welcome to CF :)

I agree with what's been said, the IT industry is changing. IT Depts want people that can do the job regardless of age.

And for general info there are age laws that governs companies by ensuring that they do not discriminate by age.

Hi again and thanks for your encouraging responses. I'm happy to start with 'entry level' work as I'm sure that's the best way to learn the trade,

    Cheers :)
