I've been reading this forum for a while now and thought I'd join. I'm wondering if at the age of nearly 41 if career in IT is a pointless goal? I'm out of work at the moment but I've been using PCs now for a very long time and have built quite a lot and also solved many problems for other people I know. I'm currently studying the A+ exam and then I will go for the N+ soon after.

I do however wonder if I'm just going to be edged out of any hope of a career by the younger crowd.

No offence to those who're young btw :biggrin

    Hi & welcome to CF.

Don't worry about your age, it's never to late to start training for a new career/switching careers. The IT profession, like other professions, can be entered at any time, regardless of sex, age, creed, etc. I know of many young, old and mid-aged people entering the field, so like I said "Don't worry".

Your study route seems sound to me: the A+ then the Network+.

    Good luck

    -Ken

I'm 53 and a career changer, myself. I started the whole IT-trek about 5 or 6 years ago. It took me awhile to find my niche but I'm currently developing a career as a technical writer (mixing my interest in technology and my drive to write). As the others have said, it can be done.

Thanks for the words of encouragement it really is appreciated. I was recenty told by someone who is meant to encourage people to get jobs that I would be wasting my time.

I'm going to give it my best shot.

I'm getting about 70% on mock tests for the A+ and that is without study so I'm hoping my memory can store what is needed to pass the A+ by the end of the year.

    Hi welcome :)

Your never too old and if you are getting 70% without studying you should be able to get enough study in to pass by the end of the year.

    Welcome!

I know plenty of people who started in IT in their 50s and are doing quite well. Start looking for an entry-level IT job as soon as possible, and continue with your A+ and Network+ studies. Best of luck!
