Click, Start, then Run, then in the box type CMD.

This brings the DOS Box up.

Here is a dump of me doing this:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Harry>ping 195.40.3.19

Pinging 195.40.3.19 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 195.40.3.19: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=57
    Reply from 195.40.3.19: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=57
    Reply from 195.40.3.19: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=57
    Reply from 195.40.3.19: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=57

    Ping statistics for 195.40.3.19:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 14ms, Maximum = 16ms, Average = 15ms

    C:\Documents and Settings\Harry>

The IP address I used was just for illustration. Replace with the IPs for your other machines.

Having checked out my daughters settings everything is identical to yours apart from the bottom line which Ive included below:

    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

Dont know if this makes a difference or not? Also Ive tried firefox and had no joy.

What address did you ping? I *hope* it was a box other than the one you were pinging from?

Mark, what kind of Internet connection does your daughter have i.e. dial up, ISDN, ADSL or cable?

Was she able to connect to the Internet at her house with any other computer prior to this or is the Internet connection a new one?

Good - that means that the network is working!

Now try ping www.certforums.co.uk and see if it works.

My daughter has a ADSL connection and has a desktop computer that works fine and is now connected to the router. Her laptop finds the router and says it is connected but will not load a page. When I brought her laptop to my house it does the exact thing!

Can you please explain how i go about doing this!
Also will i have to configure the laptop every time she brings it round and then goes home where she will use it?

Exactly the same way as you did before - it is just that there is a 'name' there instead of numbers.

On the second bit - the only config you should have to do is to change the AP it is connected to. And if this happens often enough it will remember the settings and connect automaticaly.

Okay Mark, well to me it looks like you do have some connectivity because the ping to certforums resolved the correct IP address, so you do have DNS resolution. The ping probably failed to get a reply because her router or firewall is blocking pings.

Here's a couple of things to check. Firstly while you are troubleshooting, disable any personal firewalls she may have running on her laptop. XP SP2 has a built in one or she might have zone alarm or Norton or some other firewall installed. Firewalls protect computers by not allowing certain types of communication, occasionally they block communication that you actually want.

Secondly make sure her browser is not set up to use a proxy server. I realise Firefox does the same but it might have picked up settings from Internet Explorer?

Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > and make sure *never dial a connection* is ticked. The click on the LAN Settings button and un-check *use a proxy server for your LAN* and tick the box *automatically detect settings*.

Let us know what you find.

Firstly there is no firewall on the laptop at all.
Secondly I followed your instuctions but it is no different to before.
What I do notice is that when i right click and open "View Available Wireless Networks" it is different to mine.
On my daughters laptop it picks up the same network as mine but at the bottom of the window it has a connect button. Obviously I have tried this to no avail.

It must be connected via *something*, as the pings you tried got responses from your other machines, and the name lookup worked.

I suggest you do the following:

Open a DOS box as you did for ping
    type
    Code:
    ipconfig /all
copy the result and post it here.

Mark, I don't know whether this is a typo or a copy and paste? But your default gateway address is wrong. It should be 192.168.1.1

This is handed out by the DHCP server in either your BT broadband modem/router or your wireless access point.

Can you confirm this setting as it is important. The default gateway is the exit door to your local network. Packets not destined for local addresses are sent to the default gateway. This is where packets destined for the Internet are sent.

    Let us know.

Ive just checked the settings and they are as listed above (I used copy and paste). The Default Gateway is; 168.192.1.1.

I checked the settings on my laptop (which works ok) and they are all the same: 192.168.1.1

    Someone's been playing then! :biggrin

Control panel->Network connection and right click the WiFi connection and select properties.
Click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and select properties.
Click Advanced. The 'gateways' box will probably have an entry of 168.192. etc. Click it and remove it. Now OK out.

Not sure how the ping DNS lookup worked with that there though. (actualy - now I reread it I do know how it worked!)
