I am doing all I can currently to get as much exposure to the world of I.T as I can. I am currently studying for my A+ and I volunteer 3 afternoons a week on the helpdesk in my local council. All this on top of my full time job! I know I am a martyr :p

I am lucky in that I have a job with the hours to allow me to do this.

However, I am being asked by my boss at the local council I volunteer at whether I would like to specialise in hardware/software. Whilst I know the differences, I have no clue as to what they are like to work with on a full time basis...

    Opinions wanted please...

Asking whether you want to focus on hardware or software so early in your career is a very open ended question. The answer to which will more than likely be 'a bit of both'.

You won't know what you want to focus on until you've had more exposure and find something you want to gun for.

The A+ is a very hardware oriented exam so perhaps that's why he is asking...

If it were me, I'd say both.

I think I'd tentatively ask why he's enquiring (could be he hasa role in mind for you).

Maybe say you're unsure this early in your career but you recognise the value of pursuing recognised certs in their "correct" order and so have started with the A+. Then add that you'd like to get experience in both areas and see if he's thinking of something specific for you.

The more and wider areas of IT you experience the more you'll be able to decide th sort of things you like.

All credit to you for getting some experience early on even if it is only voluntary :thumbleft
