    Bluerinse, he's right in that there is definitely a birthday tradition of punching people's arms but I've no idea what it's called.

    We use to give birthday punches in school instead of spankings. Maybe it was that?

    Editor's note for the yanks: I believe what we call public schools, you call private schools and what we call state schools you call public shools. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.:D

    I think the yanks version makes more sense :rolleyes:

    Public schools which are not available to the general public is way too confusing for me.

    :blink Why would a private school be called public? And if your in a state school here, your probably doing life. Would you like me to enroll ya? Little advice, don't take your soap on a rope with ya.:twisted:

    I had this thought as I was typing the post so I looked it up on Wikipedia. The reason is that traditionally in the UK, schools were run by churches and so were only open to people of the same denomination. Privately run schools were opened that had no religious leaning and so they were open to everyone (as long as they could afford the fees), hence public schools. I think once the reason is explained it makes more sense.:D
