I ain't posting this as some sort of sympathy-gathering drivel (tho a wee bit would be nice :D )

Found out yesterday that we're all losing our jobs at the end of the month at the ISP I work for. To be honest, we'd seen it coming for a while, but it's finalised now, so its now a matter of finding a new job ASAP. Can't say I'll be sad to leave, to be honest...

Basically, does anyone have any advice or tips about how best to quickly capitalise on the experience I have, and best present such a situation to a potential employer ? No way do I want any lengthy period of unemployment, so if you Guys have any experience of this, I'd be grateful for your help :D

btw - you realise that it's bad news for you lot in the short-term, as it could mean I have more time to spend on CertForums :P

    nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

right, comon guys, we gotta get gav a job!!!! lol.

i have no idea mate - best advice would be to sign up to some agencies for a start, and phone them once a week, every week (always ask to speak to the same person). the more you annoy them, the more they will remember you when i position comes up.

also, check the papers and the jobcentre website on a daily basis. IT jobs are always so damn competitive, you want to make sure ure application is in pretty early!

    Good Luck mate

Sorry to hear about the bad news Gav.

As Fergal said, hit the agencies every week and the papers.

Another thing you could do is to find any big companies in your area and go along to see them. See if you can arrange an 'informational' with them. Your aim is not to get a job but to introduce yourself to them, find out about the company, and to find out what would make you attractive to them.

    Sorry I can't offer you more.[IMG]

Really sorry to hear that mate, it's a bummer for sure [IMG][IMG]

Other than what the other two said, are there any other ISP's in your area that you might be able to get onboard with? That would be my first port of call, otherwise, hit the agencie's, check the papers, and look on the web.

Good luck with the search Gav, I'm sure it will all work out. Fingers crossed for you mate. [IMG]

    ok
im gonna sound like a complete ass
and i apologise, but just compare this to your backup comments and it will make more sense ;)

you say this is not really a suprise, and its been in the works, and your really glad about it anyway, so, im hoping you have a) already tighened up your CV and got it in order, b) started circulating and applying a wee while ago

if this is the case you may be in luck
i mean, i dont know the market up there so i could be off base, but down here its over subscribed, and you sort of need to get your name around for a good few weeks before you start getting serious call backs. you get a few quick calls at the beginning, but nothing with any thought, and rarely get a result from it

it sounds like your glad to be shot of them, get circulating asap, apply for as many jobs at as many agencies as you can, even if they are a little above your caliber, and even if it doesnt sound appealing, you will get your CV ciruculated that way, and thats the key here, circulation and coverage, applying for a few jobs is all well and good, if your lucky they will all be for seperate agencies :)

good luck mate and all the best in the search, it can be hard

direct your browser to jobserve.com :)

Firstly thanks to each and every one of you for all your kind and supportive words. As you can imagine, those mean a lot to a guy at this kind of time. However, I meant what I said about not seeking sympathy - I look at the big picture, after all - in light of recent events !

So to the better news - today at work I got a call to come for interview for Tech Support for a web-hosting outfit in Glasgow - the guy was all over me, so feeling is good. Quite a bit of travel tho, so it may not work out, but I'm up for the experience anyway...

Other than that, thanks again, and I've more or less done all you guys have suggested, so maybe me and my CV aren't such a bad combo after all....:D

    @ Phoenix - no worries m8 :biggrin

    Cheers Guys :D

OK, situation update for you, Guys...

The company I mentioned earlier that called me for interview came back and offered me the job today. It's good news in that I won't now be unemployed at all, but it is still doing the same as I was already (minus actually working with the servers, etc)

So a sideways move, same money (for now anyway), more travelling, but a job at least.

Just want to thank you ALL again for all your kind words and support - it's just another example of what makes this CertForums Community a really special place to be...thanks Guys [IMG]
