I have already replied to this thread but here is my take so far, and mind these are MY views and no-one elses.

I have been lucky with my lady, because when I said that I wanted to retain for IT she agreed as it is something that I had wanted to. I have had the full backing from my wife and family (the kids being more difficult to say "Leave me alone I'm studying"). I wonder if there may be an age difference here. I have been married for 19 years now and the days of oing out for a weekend rave ended when the children arrived. Time was available and we didn't have the time/money/oppertunity to go out together every day. If your GF needs this time then time has to be made. But to give up your certs just because your GF says so then how would that look to prospective employers. OK perhaps that's a bit strong, but I used to do the interviewing for staff, and that would be the type of questions I would ask.

All I can say is the cert thing is personel and if you feel that you can make it without them then go for it and proove us all wrong. However, I feel that all the advice given here and at TU is solid and good.

At the end of all this it is your choice and you will have to weigh up the pros and cons of cert/no certs and studying/home life. I know and I'm sure other know, it is a delicate balance and only you and your circumstances and dictate what you will do.

Said it earlier, you will be missed on the forums and I can only hope you will give it some time and remain an active/semi active member here.

I wish you all the very best in all you do.

    Andrew

Sorry to see you go, Monkey...however if you are working in tech your participation here is still valuable and we might be able to answer a question or two for you on occasion.

Whatever your decision, good luck and godspeed. :)

Holy cr@p! I spend a day's quality time with my other half and the monkey announces he's leaving!

I can't really add much more to what has already been said, other than to say not to completely give up your studies, perhaps in the quiet times at work you could hit the books?

Good luck my friend in whatever path your future takes. 8)

Hey Monkey, it's a sad thing to see someone leave CF and especially someone that has really enlivened the CF atmosphere as you have.

That said, I agree with some of the other comments about what your GF wants. Don't let her push you into doing something that you don't want to do. You might be in the job now and you might not need the certs now, but what happens in a couple of years when you do? As you well know, IT is an ever changing beast and you need to keep up with the changes or risk falling so far behind that it's impossible to catch up.

Whatever you do I wish you well mate.:D

Short but sweet, best of luck to you mate

At least A+ is something you can come back to in the future if you change your mind, I've only been studying it since the beginning of September but I'm taking my time with it so I don't get in a situation where I have to drop something to make another thing work, which I find is the good thing about it. As already mentioned, it's not a race, because if it was by Christ I'd be dangling over the first hurdle.

Anway, thanks for all your help, nothing but beneficial to me.

A truly sad day, Monkey - most sincerely. I won't comment on the personal side of things, as it seems most of the guys above have already done so.

Good luck, thanks for bringing so much life and vibrancy to CF, and may all your bananas be bent. Take it easy, mate :thumbleft :biggrin :alc

I don't know cheek that well but it's a pity that he's decided to go! I too stopped studying cos I was "in the job" but have now realised that I need to progress as my current salary just ain't covering things! Yeah I know certs won't get me the massive salary but the continous professional development of one's self is the greatest asset that can be put on a CV. Also boosts your confidence no-end...and that's what gets you employed!

don't quit the A+ m8 - certs are for life, girlfirends are...well I'll let someone else answer that!

Drum, you don't know if that cert with your exp is what saves your cv from NOT ending up in the trash with those that have the exp, but not the certs. Now adays because of the competetion in this field, employers want a bang for thier buck, and they know they will get it because there are a lot more techs then job positions. They have to have a way to weed people out.

Of course Mitz, but the more you have, exp & certs, the more attractive the package looks to the employer!

Thanks Drum_Dude, do you have a nagging g/f who asked you to stop the A+ or did you stop because of the lack of time to study?:blink

Well I spent more time chasing after women, my band got real busy, and I felt safe and sound in my 2nd line support role.

Now that I want to move on and get more money - that'll hopefully lead onto better women & a new drumkit - I need to complete what I started...My experience is good but I just feel that I need to complete my certs! Don't ask why but to me it's just the icing on the cake! I may never work in all of what I study but *hey* I'll certainly have a basic grasp...one that'll at least prevent people bullshitting me...well hopefully!!!
