After years of thinking about it, I start working for myself as a contractor in the New Year. So my main goal for 2016 is to make a success of that.

In terms of general tech stuff - I want to get a better understanding of VMware NSX and vRealise Automation as my vCloud Director/vShield background is becoming less relevent I think. I'd also like to get a handle on how the "other side" is going cloud and get a better understanding of AWS and Azure.

Cert wise, I'd like to do MCSA 2012. Yeah I know, already old, but I want something more recent than MCSE '03 on the CV if I'm out touting myself for contracts :) I'll probably look at VCP-DCV6 near the end of the year as well. I'd like to look at VCAP/VCIX (whichever it is now!) but that might be a 2017 goal!

Outside of IT, I hope to have my private pilots license by easter time as well so can quite literally spend more time with my head in the cloud (well, actually I should be avoiding the clouds... but anyway).

So the VCAP is still present, it takes two VCAP's to make the VCIX :)

There's some great goals here, guys. Nothing like seeing the CF goals thread, to make you pull your socks up.

I achieved the majority of what I wanted in 2015, and got some unexpected surprises, too.
2016 is going to be intense.

I want 2x MCSE (Sharepoint and Messaging)
I'm going to do more VoIP stuff at work, and get the advanced cert for that.
I'm going to be getting more involved in project work, so may consider a cert for that also.

Then... books. I'm going to have at least 8 titles coming out next year, and have set myself a challenge to write 2,000,000 words next year. I already have the novels planned, in the main, and this works out to 21 books. I'll be posting updates about that on my blog and FB, so you can all see how well I fail :P

And I'd also like to do a couple of MTB sportives around the south (there are plenty to pick from on the Wiggle website).

    First post, hi everyone.

Last year I really wanted a messaging mcse, but we had a baby in October, I failed that one.
I did take the 710 exam and found it incredibly difficult to pass. A combination of not sitting exams for 15 years and Microsoft thinking you have to remember some super specific things.

This year. I'm in two minds whether to do the mcse or to persue my ultimate dream of making a living from webapps. I've had the million pound idea, or two, I've got theskill set but it needs polish.

The reality is probably a combination of both.

Would any of the guys who said never again to the mcse care to elaborate?

Not to put a dampener on the million pound ideas but I think you would be beaten by well connected hipster types with inferior 'ideas' using cheap fresh East European grads as code monkeys. (You know the same ones that bleat about a skill shortage).

Like Kate Middleton's brother; Boomf.Com (Sorry not allowed to post links.)

It is, however, possible for a home office coder to make good money out of very bespoke apps that are useful to niche or individual businesses.

Someone mentioned pen testing; The BCS do free one day pen testing starter sessions based on kodi tool chain (I think you need to pay a nominal fee if you are not a member). However pen testing in the UK is monopolised by the agencies and these skills are not particularly useful in normal security jobs or for contractors. (By useful I mean paying).

All IMHO as a gnarled old contractor for 30 years now left IT.
