I'm not a gamer and therefore, I have a tendency to think the premise for all computer games are "stupid". Ok, that's my bias and I'll stick to it.

On the other hand, I saw this little item this morning and thought, "Is this really a feminist issue"? You decide:

    Feminist issue my foot.

I think it is a problem in that one of the biggest epidemics currently facing the Western world is obesity. It's quite an irresponsible theme to have for a game, but that is my opinion.

But I do agree with Trip. In the main, a game is a game. Heck, I'd be more offended if she was a six-foot skinny blonde with large... eyes. Because most women aren't like that, sorry boys

Don't think of her as a fat chick in a room... think... anti-Rapunzel. Think... Hanzel and Gretel. Without Gretel. Or the witch.

Actually Arro, that was my thought exactly. As far as I can tell, most females in computer games are depicted as these super model femmes (which makes it incredibly obvious that the games are written by males who don't date much), rather than "normal" women. Of course, all the guys are super muscular dudes that make the Incredible Hulk look like a 98 pound weakling. In the end, it's all fantasy...uh, male fantasy. I wonder what a computer game would look like if it pandered to women's fantasies?

That would depend on the woman.

Technically, as far as I'm concerned, my dream computer game is Morrowind.

If I want *fantasies* I've got a boyfriend for that

As an ardent programmerist I resent your remarks! We programmers date when we feel like it and not normally fat biffer princesses or ones that require gold treasure chests... :biggrin

I wouldnt object if the game featured a fat man! Very strange behaviour from these so called feminists. The objectification of women in videogames is fine but throw a chubby girl in there and they all go bananas!!

Fine then back to scantily clad barbarianess's it is

Oh and not intending to stir it up here but the only people inclined to use the term heteronormative would be homo/bisexuals. There are entire heteronormative hate campaigns out there in cyberland and I cant help but feel somehow that this stereotypical feminist harpie is somehow part of this straight bashing culture.

In this situation i neither care about the sexual persuasion of the individual making the complaint I only ask that they consider what they write instead of throwing out such hateful bile aimed at 1 section of society. Get some perspective please

If portrayal of sexual and cultural steroetypes upsets you so much then 1, why are you playing videogames in the first place and 2, Why the hell is hip hop getting off scott free

Now who can spot what I did there?

feminists are a species onto themselves that are nothing but bitter hate mongers. As a woman I really don't care what they think or feel because they will never speak for me. :dry

I'd like to try to put this into a perspective. Certainly "radical feminism" can espouse "male hatred", but the general concept of feminism isn't any more complex or threatening than the idea of having equal access to opportunities and resources between men and women.

Based on that definition, both men and woman could be considered feminists and all they'd have to have in common is the belief that women and men should be equally judged in terms of hiring opportunities and access to education. Without "feminists", women in America wouldn't have gotten the right to vote.

That said, "fat princess" video games seem to be a bit far afield as far as the whole "equal access" thing goes. As has been previously said, I'd have thought that those active in the women's movement would be far more upset at the "Lara Crofts" of the cyberworld.

To be honest I have never linked feminists with the woman rights movement. Everyone that I have ever come across has been nothing but a royall witch with a capital B. Of course I am all for woman movents. However, you will not see me ripping up some guy because he opens the door for me weather I have my hands full or not. I enjoy being a woman and treated like one. I like when someone will pull a chair out for me, or reach into their pocket for a lighter. I love being a woman and I don't need to bash another gender to prove what I am capable of doing while being womanly. Sometimes actions speak louder then words. I know a few who should really try it.

Holy Moses, have these people really got nothing more important to worry about!!!

    I can see it now:

Dawn's light shines through the windows of the tiny Taking The Y Out Of XY office littered with feminist propaganda. A calendar of topless muscley males holding infants or changing tyres is on the wall, full of dart holes and with devil horns drawn on their heads

"Morning Gertrude, what are you doing there?'

"Oh, morning Agatha, I'm just reading the papers to try and find some male-related or negative feminine portrayals to hate"'

"Great idea. You know what, a man offered me his seat on the Tube today. I couldn't believe it. I shouted that he was suppressing my rights as an independant woman and called him a phallocrat"

"And rightly so Agatha.....now lets see. Miss Brazil pageant about to start. Done that one. Hmmm, it says a leading female City Banker got offered a six figure sum for sexual discrimination, well frankly that's appaling, she should at least have been given ownership of the entire company as well as an all female staff to manage and 9 years maternity leave along with 14 years paid sick leave for the stress of it all...."

"ARRRGGGGHHHHH, look!!!! Look Gertrude, a computer game that features a slightly rotund female as the lead character who enjoys eating cake!!! I have never been so insulted in all my life. This is all wrong, this is OBVIOUSLY the product of vicious male minds, NO woman would be overweight, a princess or like cake, no woman at all. Maiking a lead character overweight is obviously.....fatist......and....... and the fact that it's a woman is cleary an indication of......sexism........and........she's a princess.......she should be a Union leader, or a dock worker. Come Gertrude, man the phone......I mean, get on the phone (crosses herself and mutters a prayer to Jesusina), we have to do some hating!!!!!"
